MOVE AND STRETCH! While we are all making adaptations to academic learning, let us not forget the importance of physical exercise and stretching for the health of our bodies and minds.
โIt (physical activity) is the only subject in school that benefits the whole child,โ Matt Flesock, executive director of UCLA Health Sound Body Sound Mind said. โIt improves academic performance. It improves mental health. Students sleep better. It decreases stress, decreases anxiety. Itโs kinda this magical subject.โ It also helps prevent obesity, which is crucial, as recent studies have shown young people are less active during the pandemic.
COVID-19 and winter months in Colorado will have students missing out on opportunities to accomplish important physical activity. Studies show that children who participated in physically active lessons had significantly greater gains in mathematics speed tests, general mathematics, and spelling scores.
For several years, A&B has provided Physical Development programming for schools in the Denver area. We are continuing our mission for physical activity and cognitive learning as we now offer our Large Motor Skills Program for grades K-5th virtually.
Athletics & Beyondโs Large Motor Skills Program is a set of activities to help children 18 months โ 10 years of age improve their large motor skills. Large motor skills require whole-body movement and involve large muscles to perform activities such as rolling, jumping, leaping, hopping, skipping, and eye-hand coordination for skills like catching and throwing a ball. Our student-athletes who are actively training at the high school and collegiate level are working with our personal trainers and educators on the best physical activity programs for our young students of all grades.
