🌟 Local News Solutions 2025: Recap! 🌟

We did it! What an incredible three days at this year’s convention. Local News Solutions 2025 brought together journalists, funders, and civic leaders to share courage, creativity, and collaboration at a time when local journalism is facing some of its hardest challenges yet.

We are grateful to our partners at Colorado News Collaborative - COLab and Colorado Media Project for co-hosting this convening, and to our inspiring speakers and panelists — including Dean Battinto Batts, Jim Brady, Tina Dyakon, Maritza Félix, Peter Lamb, Justin Mayo, Garry Pierre-Pierre, Kevin Slimp, Kaveh Waddell, Joey & Lindsey Young, Kyle Clark, Lee Ann Colacioppo, Kelly Dunkin, Laura Frank, Latia Henderson — who reminded us that we are not alone in this work.

A special thank-you as well to our emcee,Dan Grech, who kept the energy high and the program moving each day.

📌 Convention highlights included:

A candid opening night conversation between Attorney General Phil Weiser and CPA CEO Tim Regan-Porter on policy, press freedom, and the fragility of local news.

The Legislative Lunch Panel, featuring Rep. Jennifer Bacon and Rep. Michael Carter and moderated by Tim Regan-Porter, was described by many as one of the most powerful sessions of the convention. The conversation cut to the heart of how local news can shine a light on injustices, but also how it can sometimes perpetuate stereotypes or overlook critical voices. Their reflections on race, representation, and policymaking offered a needed challenge to all of us: How can newsrooms serve communities of color more accurately and meaningfully — and what happens when they don’t?

We also want to recognize Tim Regan-Porter 's inspired leadership. Even amidst personal loss, he showed up with strength and clarity. His deep commitment to supporting local news helped make this gathering a space for renewal and action.

And thank you to the entire Colorado Press Association team, Rachel Pickarski, Randia Toledo and our special part-time teammate, Alison Cooper who worked alongside Tim and our partners to make Local News Solutions 2025 possible.

Despite the headwinds facing journalism, the spirit of this year’s convention was undeniable: hope, resilience, and the belief that trusted, community-focused news is worth fighting for.

🎶 And because so many of you asked… yes, the convention songs that played during our slideshow are now shareable!

Closing slideshow song: https://drive.google.com/file/d/11grIwtvbK0mqASuyU0ebVg9HBpYukCGs/view?usp=sharing

Lighthearted, a little chaotic, and very 2025. Consider them the unofficial soundtrack to a convention full of energy and collaboration.
