All four gates opened on the Morrow Point Dam in Montrose County for the first time since 2017 last week, providing a spectacular display of force as water spills into the Gunnison River, the fifth largest tributary to the Colorado River. While the flow from 15-foot-wide gates 468 feet above was intriguing to tourists and locals, the water was intended to simulate spring runoff conditions to protect the Colorado pikeminnow, razorback sucker and three other endangered fish species. 📷 William Woody, Special to The Colorado Sun

Five gray wolves from Oregon were released in Grand County on Monday, three years after Colorado voted to reintroduce the animal by the end of 2023. It is the first time a state — not the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service — has introduced an endangered species into wildland in the U.S. Dan Gibbs, the executive director of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources, said "it's been blood, sweat and tears" to reach the release Monday. He said if any wildlife agency in the country was capable of being the first to release an endangered species, it's his team. "I could not be more proud," he said. A second group of five wolves will be released in the same area, somewhere in Eagle, Grand or Summit counties. The Colorado plan calls for releasing 30 to 50 wolves on the Western Slope in the next three to five years. 📷 Provided by Colorado Parks And Wildlife ➡️ Read more: https://cosun.co/48fBuSg ☀️ Like and follow for more Colorado news

The Denver office market continues to struggle more than three years after office workers headed home to work remotely. Office vacancy rates in downtown Denver hit a high of 30.6% in the third quarter, the first time they've been above 30% since 2000, according to real estate brokerage firm CBRE. The overall Denver metro area saw office vacancy rates increase to 22.8%. Since 2022, the percentage of full-time workers who are completely remote has dropped and stabilized around 20%, Real Capital Solutions Director of Research Dan Sorrells said. Meanwhile, the percentage of hybrid workers has been rising, now between 40% and 45%, and may also stabilize. But whether companies have adopted a remote or hybrid workforce, or have seen business suffer due to the economic decline, that's created other issues, like "zombie buildings," or office properties that are leased but aren't being used. ➡️ Read more: https://cosun.co/47OilHc ☀️ Like and follow for more Colorado news

Why do Colorado's open jobs outnumber people who are looking for one? Age. The size of the labor force is very much connected to the state’s population. And even though we’re still growing faster than many other states, we’re getting older and have more workers doing things like, well, retiring.

Volunteers are on the hunt for one of Colorado’s most adorable animals before climate change erases them. Pikas — relatives of rabbits that look like furry russet potatoes with round ears — are some of the cutest wildlife to roam the Colorado mountains. But climate modeling suggests that by the end of the century pikas may be effectively gone from Rocky Mountain National Park. Community scientists with the Colorado Pika Project are trekking up to find the dynamic mammals — which can live as high as 14,000 feet — to keep track of their numbers. "It’s a lot easier to conserve a species at the start of its decline than toward the end of it, when there’s very few left of them," said Alex Wells, former co-director of Colorado Pika Project and community conservation director at the Denver Zoo. ➡️ Read more: https://cosun.co/3QV1hcG 📹 Kristi Odom, Colorado Pika Project

Hundreds of protesters held a sit-in outside the Colorado Capitol on Monday to demand that Gov. Jared Polis ban guns statewide. They say they'll remain there until Polis answers the demand of a national advocacy organization, Here 4 The Kids, and signs an executive order banning guns, or for at least four days, the same length of time the Selma to Montgomery marches lasted. Polis' office said he won't sign an order that violates the U.S. Constitution. But Here 4 The Kids organizers, some of whom are advocating that the Second Amendment be repealed, said other civil rights laws that seemed unthinkable decades ago — like voting rights — passed following civil acts of disobedience. ➡️ Read more about the protesters and their demands: https://cosun.co/3NcrHEA 👤 (1) Kim Massale 👤 (2) Tiffany Boyd 📹 Olivia Sun (via Report for America) & Ciara Zavala, The Colorado Sun ☀️ Like and follow for more Colorado new
