My 12-year-old daughter returned home with a pixie cut after spending the day with my MIL — when I discovered the real reason, I burst into tears.
My daughter, Emily, had always been famous for her hair. It was thick, chestnut brown, and so long it reached well past her hips. She adored it so much that even suggesting a tiny trim could turn into a tantrum.
Every Sunday night, she would sit on the floor between my knees while I brushed it. If I ever mentioned cutting it, she would say,
"Never, Mom. You’re going to have to bury me with it."
"Mommy, I’m never cutting my hair."
So when my mother-in-law, Linda, offered to take Emily shopping and buy ice cream, I didn’t think twice. They had always been close.
But when Emily returned home around five, something was clearly wrong.
"Hey, sweetheart! Did you two have fun?" I called from the kitchen.
Emily didn’t respond. She hurried past me toward the stairs, wearing an oversized hoodie with the hood pulled so tightly around her face that I could hardly see her cheeks.
It was 92 degrees outside.
"Emily, why on earth are you wearing that?"
"I’m cold," she mumbled without looking at me.
I knew my daughter, and I recognized that voice.
Something was wrong.
I followed her upstairs and found her sitting on the edge of her bed with her shoulders slumped.
"Honey, look at me. What happened?"
"Nothing."
Then I noticed several tiny chestnut hairs clinging to the fabric near her neck.
My stomach sank.
"Emily… take off the hood."
Her eyes filled immediately.
"Mom, please."
"Sweetheart, whatever happened, you can tell me."
She stared at the carpet for several moments before slowly reaching up with trembling hands and pulling the hood back.
I literally stumbled backward.
The hair she had spent YEARS growing was gone.
Not trimmed to her shoulders.
Not cut into a bob.
Gone.
In its place was a pixie cut.
"Oh my God, Emily… who did this?"
"Mom, please," she whispered. "Just… ask Grandma. I can’t tell you the truth."
That was all I needed to hear.
Ten minutes later, I was banging on Linda’s front door so hard my hand hurt.
When she opened it, I didn’t even allow her to speak.
"What the HELL did you do to my daughter?"
Linda stared at me for a long moment, and what terrified me most was that she didn’t look guilty.
She looked devastated.
Then she silently stepped aside.
"You think I did this to Emily," she said. "I didn’t. But when you discover the real reason, I’m afraid you won’t be able to remain standing."
