Experimenting a bit with some glitchy editing. Aerial footage is from a short flight I took over an open cut gold mine near Cripple Creek, CO.

This thing is ENORMOUS. They've essentially removed an entire mountaintop.

Even in my widest shot, it was difficult to get the whole thing in frame.
Bananas.

As a feat of engineering, it's impressive, but the scale of the destruction is a little disquieting; especially in such an otherwise beautiful landscape.

I've been traveling quite a bit for a handful of upcoming video projects, so I haven't posted an update in a while, but I wanted to share this video I recently completed for Columbine Country Club, and their tremendous contribution to the Evans Caddie Scholarship Program.

Every year, this wonderful organization awards upwards of 1,000 full tuition scholarships to a diverse group of young Caddies across the United States, including many from Colorado, who are invited to live at the prestigious Evans Scholar House on the CU Boulder campus.

Columbine has been supporting the program for years, and has produced a long line of Caddies who've demonstrated exemplary academic skills, community leadership, and a strong work ethic, in addition to having a legitimate financial need. These are great kids, who work unbelievably hard to get into college, and truly deserve some help.

2016's winner, the thoroughly awesome Sydney Bates, is a fantastic example of the kind of truly special young people this program seeks to aid and elevate. After spending a few hours with her, I can tell you with 100% confidence that Sydney is an incredible kid, who I have absolutely no doubt will go on to do great things, and will do everything she can to reach back and help out other young people. She's THE BEST.

If you have a few moments, I'd love it if you would check out the video I made to help bring attention to this genuinely worthwhile organization, and the amazing kids it aims to assist.

Thanks!

A promotional and informational video for Columbine Country Club's participation in the wonderful Evans Scholar Caddie Program, an incredibly generous foundation…

I had to wait a little bit to release this one, but I'm extremely happy to be able to share this cool little travel video I shot around Christmas with talented travel journalist, Carri Wilbanks for her super fun travel series, Catch Carri.

It was my first visit to Savannah, Georgia and I absolutely LOVED it. It's a ridiculously beautiful city. And the hotel we stayed at -- the B Historic -- was great. The food was UNBELIEVABLE. OMG.

Endless thanks and gratitude to Carri for putting up with me on the trip, and for giving me the opportunity to explore a gorgeous city I had never seen before.

Canada celebrated 150 years of independence on July 1st, and my shooting partner, Kris Farruggia, and I were lucky enough to be in Banff, Alberta for the festivities, as part of a six-day filming trip that I'm ridiculously excited about.

I had picked out this location to capture the fireworks back when I was booked for the gig in December, and I'm happy to say it turned out to be a wonderful spot!

We arrived about 4 hours early, thinking we would be more or less alone on the lake, but by the time fireworks went off at 11pm, the shores were *packed* with revelers and photographers. It looked like the Normandy invasion, but with tripods, and polite Canadians in kayaks and canoes instead of beach obstacles and troop carriers.

Surrounded by at least two dozen photographers from all over the world, I was struck by how overwhelmingly courteous and helpful everyone was; sharing space, keeping out of each other's shots, exchanging advice on focal lengths and shutter speeds, and even loaning each other lenses. It was a really cool experience. I'm incredibly grateful I got to be a part of it.

I've long admired Roger Deakins' work on the Coen Brothers' movie, Fargo, and I've recently gotten into the anthology television show based on the film.

The entire production is first-rate, and the cinematography and color-grading are especially good.

Feeling inspired by-- and a little obsessed with -- the show's cold, bleak images, I took some aerial footage I shot after a mild spring snow storm and tried to give it the Fargo treatment-- dropping the temperature, and compositing in some heavy snow and fog.

Kinda fun, right?

We had what could possibly be our last snow storm of the spring this year, so a friend and I headed out with our quadcopters to do a little aerial filming, including some nice flyovers of City Park here in Denver.

I probably went a little overboard with my color grade, but I wanted to see how far I could to push the pinks and blues in the sunrise without having the image fall apart. I'll most likely tone it down the saturation quite a bit in any final edit.

Time and resourses are never infinite, and on a lot of the projects I work on, they can often be fairly scarce.

Sometimes the weather won't cooperate. Other times, the light gives out. A subject acts up. Who knows?
Ocassionally, you gotta work with what ya' got.

I always push hard to get things right in camera, but sometimes, you just have to ... sigh ... "fix it in post". :)

I received a new little Phantom 4 Pro last week from DJI, and took it out to rural Colorado last night to do a few quick low-light camera tests.

For a drone this size, I've been REALLY impressed with the image I'm getting. Super clean, a MUCH better codec, wider dynamic range, less aliasing and moire... really solid, all around. Liking it A LOT.

As part of a long-term video project, I'll be shooting timelapse at Columbine Country Club once a week on average, from now, until their new facilities are fully constructed and have their grand opening in the fall. It's by far the most extended timelapse project I'll have ever done focusing on a single location.

In an effort to give the project some variety, and keep myself challenged, I want to try and add some interesting hyperlapses (timelapses with really large camera movements), and thought it would be cool to try doing some of them with my drone.

Here's a few clips I shot today, and my very first stabs at aerial hyperlapses.

There's some rough spots in there, and I have A LOT to learn, but I think I'm hooked.

Super excited to be partnering with Global Brain and the United Nations again for a couple of upcoming branding and design projects, aimed at assisting the UN in their efforts to promote conservation and protection of the world's oceans.

Here's a few logo sketches I've put together so far.
