On this day, December 12, 2020, Charley Pride died at the age of 86, dude to health complications relating to the COVID-19 virus.

In the 1950’s he played baseball for the Negro League. Then in the 1960’s he became a country singer, having an incredibly successful career spanning the following decades. As country music’s first Black superstar, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000. He is still one of just 3 Black members of the Grand Ole Opry.

For today’s we’re looking at our arsenal of vintage Ampeg amps and speaker cabinets. We’ve got an early 70’s V4 halfstack that sounds as good on bass as it does on guitar; an early 70’s B15s amp pushing a SVT 410-HLF Heritage; a 1967 SB-12, and a 1997 B-100r.

💿 On this day, December 5, 1973, Paul McCartney and Wings’ studio album, Band on the Run, released in the US having released 6 days earlier in the UK. This was Paul’s 5th album since leaving the Beatles in 1970. It would ultimately become his most successful post-Beatles album, with 2 big hits, ‘Jet’ and ‘Band on the Run’.

🎸 For today’s GearTalk, we have what is effectively a Fender Esquire, although it is very much a “partscaster” build. This began as a 2004 Made in Mexico 50’s Esquire, and it was Dave’s main guitar during the nearly 2 decades he performed as Johnny Cash’s guitarist, Luther Perkins, in various tribute shows.

One of the very first upgrades, done long before we acquired the guitar in 2007, was the pickup. This is a Seymour Duncan Antiquity for 1955 Tele. Eventually the bridge was swapped for one with brass saddles. The pickguard was replaced several times. And the electronics have all been redone to 1950’s Esquire specs. Finally, in 2018, the original to***co burst body was swapped for this Made in USA Fender 60th Anniversary thin skin nitro finish body.

On this day back in 1992, Whitney Houston kicked off what would become a 14-week reign at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 with her iconic take on “I Will Always Love You.” Originally written by Dolly Parton, Whitney’s version—recorded for The Bodyguard—swept the world off its feet. It went Diamond, topped charts almost everywhere, and became the best-selling single ever by a female artist. Not a bad day in music history, right? 🎶✨

🖋️ On this day, November 21, 1955, Elvis Presley signed with RCA 🖋️

In 1955, RCA bought Elvis Presley’s contract from Sun Records for a then-record $35,000—covering his five Sun Records singles and unreleased tracks. The deal kept Sun afloat (Sam Phillips even invested in Holiday Inn) and launched Elvis into global stardom, with his first RCA single “Heartbreak Hotel” soon hitting #1. That same day, Elvis also signed with manager Colonel Tom Parker and secured a new publishing deal—setting the stage for his meteoric rise.
