It’s a great day to be a comic book enthusiast! It’s a week of Absolutes for DC with Green Lantern and Superman, along with a Zatanna one shot and Batgirl still going strong. Over at Marvel the Spirits of Violence hold some promise, the White Tiger is reborn and Venom hits 250. Over in Image we finally get the big reveal of the mastermind in Sam and Twitch, Author Immortal has a dark story to tell, and Rocketfellers answer all our questions. This week’s top five are sponsored by All C’s Collectibles who also offers an incredible selection of trading card games. Stop by and see what latest sets are waiting for you, but for now we’ve got five stacked high ready to fly.
#1> Without heroes…without protection…without restraint…there is only ABSOLUTE EVIL. The emergence of superheroes has caught the attention of the world…and it’s certainly caught the attention of the people who run it. Ra’s al Ghul, Veronica Cale, Elenore Thawne, Hector Hammond, and the mysterious Joker have worked at cross-purposes until now, but this growing threat requires new ways of thinking…and new partnerships. An insidious betrayal from within their ranks is imminent, and if they don’t take action, they’ll lose control of a planet that was built to be their playground! Superstars Al Ewing and Giuseppe Camuncoli join forces to kickstart the next era of Absolute Universe stories…with several shocking new character reveals, and one big unmissable twist! (S) Al Ewing (A) Giuseppe Camuncoli, Stefano Nesi
Smurfs Take> The Absolute titles are taking the DCU by storm and it’s good and bad in some ways. Marvel has been down this road before with the Ultimate Universe and I’m not sure if DC is going to suffer the same fate. Can there be two universes going at once? This title has my attention more than the rest of the launches as we start to get the bigger picture. All we have seen are the heroes, but the villains have been here the entire time and are not happy about the increase to the hero population. The character choices here are magnificent, without a doubt and leads me to believe DC might have a larger plan as we get to see what’s been going on behind the curtain.
#2> ROBIN RIDES THE BLACK MARIAH – Part One
Injured, cuffed, and tossed in the back of a GCPD paddy wagon with a dozen uncuffed and violent criminals, Robin (Tim Drake) will have to use everything he’s learned from the Dark Knight if he hopes to survive his own dark night. Will Batman arrive in time to help him, or will this mission change the way the city and the GCPD view the Dynamic Duo forever? (S) Matt Fraction (A) Jorge Jimenez
Smurfs Take> I wasn’t sure what to expect from the first issue only because there’s so many thigs going on within the Batman titles themselves. We haven’t finished with Hush part 2 in the last Batman series; you have the Absolute series going on and for all I know this title is just another fever dream that Bruce is going to wake up from in six months (thankfully I was wrong). What I did like are all of the different elements Fraction pulled from the previous stories and runs that made this a remarkable read. It felt familiar yet fresh and new with a couple of twists that I wasn’t prepared for but loved by the end of the issue. I haven’t been this excited about a bat title since Snyder’s return and if this is any indication of what to expect in the future issues, it might actually restore me as a Batfan once again.
#1> Brush up on the coolest Spider-Man before he hits the small screen! Spidey legend ERIK LARSEN puts on his writing hat to reinvent this Spider-Man like he did the original with rising-star artist ANDREA BROCCARDO. It's the 1930s and Peter Parker is a private detective by day, vigilante Spider-Man by night. Things were going well until a certain dame walked into his office to ask Peter to solve the case of her father's murder. The dame's name? GWEN STACY! This case may not only break George Stacy's police department, but Spider-Man himself! (S) Erik Larsen (A) Andrea Broccardo
Smurfs Take> Happy to see this hitting the shelves especially when I never thought we would return to the Noir universe. Not sure what to expect from the live series with Nicholas Cage but this series I can really get behind. I loved the first run; thought it was something different and the perfect setting for a Spider-Man story. I still hold to that thought, granted it made an even better level in a video game but happy to see this none the less as we dive back into the gritty world.
#1> The Greatest Band Ever Reunites to Rock and Rule the World.
Discover the true (well, kinda) story of what happened to Cold Slither through the eyes of the band themselves (who were, of course, not the Dreadnoks on an undercover mission).
But as Cobra is topping the charts and dominating the world, can G.I. Joe find a way to change the tune?
Tim Seeley (Rogue, Local Man) and Juann Cabal (Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man) present the most unexpected new comic book of the year! (S) Tim Seeley (A) Juann Cabal, Rex Lokus
Smurfs Take> Ok, I know this might be a little out there for the top five, but I couldn’t help it. Strictly from the nostalgia point of view and remembering the episode in the GI Joe cartoon there was no way I could skip over this. Then add Tim Seeley as a writer and it became an instant must have if you remember the cartoon or not. I have no doubt it’s going to be ridiculous and completely over the top and kind of the point. Just from a pure entertainment factor this should be a great read, I can hear the song now.
X-Men: #1> THE HEIR RISES - THE RESISTANCE IGNITES! X YEARS LATER, the Revelation Territories stretch from the Atlantic to the Mississippi - a mutant utopia ruled by the heir of Apocalypse. But beneath the surface, rebellion brews. As a ragtag X-Men team strikes from the shadows, Revelation faces threats from within. It all begins here - the dawn of the AGE OF REVELATION! (S) Jed Mackay (A) Ryan Stegman
Smurfs Take> The buildup for this series has been pretty impressive, and I’m still not 100% sure what it’s all about. I don’t know if it would be any clearer of a picture if I was reading all of the X-Books, but I doubt it would. Channeling one of the better stories from the late 90’s is a giant help including my own curiosity and love for that run it’s hard to resist. I have high hopes this will be just as good if not better than that, returning the X-Men to its former glory years, but that could be a tall order in this day and age.
