As a Denver TV producer/journalist for many years, I’ve been hired to interview all kinds of interesting people for projects including: documentaries on company founders, numerous life achievement award videos for a Colorado trade association, and people profiles for a magazine format TV show. In addition, I produced a series of interviews with prominent Asian American leaders for a client in Los Angeles, which included a 90-minute conversation with the late Senator Daniel Inouye of Hawaii—very likely the last in-depth interview he did before his passing. I love doing this kind of work. So, now I market my services directly to families and businesses. Recently a woman called me to ask about capturing her husband’s story—he was turning 80 and had a fascinating history including: his parents surviving WWII, his childhood in Europe, his new life in the United States, and the building of a successful medical career. My normal process is to start with a day of pre-interview, gathering facts and scores of photos—really getting to know the subject. We then do about three hours of on-camera interviewing in the home. And, in this case, the result was a one-hour documentary on the man’s life, family and career. His children, grandchildren, and many others will forever be able to hear him tell his story—in his words. Everyone deserves to have their story told. Who comes to mind in your life?
