We are thrilled to be hosting Drs. Yomaira Figueroa-Vásquez and Jorell Meléndez-Badillo on campus to offer their important insight. We are just as thrilled to announce that we will also be hosting one our own in Dr. Delia Fernandez-Jones, whose work merges storytelling with historical analysis to recapture the placemaking practices that Mexicans, Tejanos, and Puerto Ricans use, with an often specific focus on Michigan.

We can't wait to host this amazing event about the challenges we face in Latine storytelling and where might be some directions we go from here. Don't forget also that we will be having a book signing and tours of the MSU Libraries Special Collections. Check out the Eventbrite to learn more and register. Space is limited!

The Heart of the City Award is given in recognition of those who have made a significant contribution to the Mid-Michigan area through inspiration, spirit, and excellent leadership. They’re dreamers, they’re visionaries, developers, creators, leaders, and partners. The bottom line is they are the heart and soul of this community and represent the Hispanic Latino Community at its best. For the year of 2025, that person is Geronimo Lerma.

With inspiration from his parents, especially his Dad, he started Footprints of Michigan. He quit a safe and secure job to fill a need within the homeless community. Providing shoes and eventually any type of footwear. He taught himself how to use Canva which led to being able to create flyers, banners, business cards etc. This in turn produced some great content for social media. He pours his heart and soul into Footprints for the benefit of others.

Countless stories of Geronimo getting called for some odd sized shoes and he would find them and deliver them. This is his passion and his reason to push forward. All of this and he still has to do his dialysis 3 times a week meaning he is not always 100%. Not even on his good days but he keeps pushing forward. For this, Cafecito Caliente will recognize Geronimo Lerma with a special Heart of the City Award at the Cafecito Awards.

The Cafecito Awards will take place Friday, September 26, 2025, beginning at 5:00pm at the Cadillac Room. More details can be found at the Cafecito Caliente website.

Community service involves helping others and improving your community. It emphasizes teamwork, kindness, and collaborative problem-solving. It focuses on improving the community you live in and the goal is to give your time and unlike jobs, it doesn’t aim for personal gain.

Cafecito Caliente will be recognizing Lupe Castillo as our Community Service person of the Year at the Cafecito Caliente Awards. Many of us know her through her work at Cristo Rey Church. Cafecito is not even sure what to write about her efforts to do the work of the Church as she has done pretty much everything. An amazing soul who gives and gives just to help others.

The lives Lupe Castillo has impacted could never be explained. People like Lupe do not always see the fruits of her labor. But please known Lupe, a community and countless lives have felt your presence as we do our part in recognizing you as our Community Service person of the Year!

The Cafecito Awards will take place Friday, September 26, 2025, beginning at 5:00pm at the Cadillac Room. More details can be found at the Cafecito Caliente website.

The Cafecito Caliente Legacy Award is presented to someone who has been instrumental to building the foundation of the Hispanic Latino community here in Mid-Michigan for many years.

For over 40 years in Lansing, Guillermo Z. Lopez has not only brought his talents to the Lansing School Board, Cristo Rey Church and its Fiesta, but also to a community by always making himself available for advice, thoughts and ideas. Guillermo has long been a pillar in our community and Cafecito is proud to select him for a 2025 Legacy Award!

Cafecito Caliente and our Title Sponsor Lake Trust Credit Union would like to invite you to come celebrate with us Friday, September 26, 2025, at the Cadillac Room in Lansing's Old Town District.
