Behind the scenes look at our Q&A with James T. Hamilton, a Hearst Professor of Communication
and director of the journalism program at Stanford University. We discussed issues surrounding computational journalism and the consequences and benefits of analytics based reporting. This short interview is a part of the Demystifying Media series that explores the impact of changes across the communications landscape.

UO Creatives Network is a professional development & jobs/internships Facebook community open to UO students and alums, moderated by OR Media. The postings are mostly J-school focused, but we welcome any UO student with an interest in storytelling and creative media.

So far we have 335 members and lots of great job/internship postings by alums. Come check us out and find job leads, project collaborators, and the occasional meme! 😉😊

Miller Integrated Nature Experience

It was such a privilege to work with this group. We would have loved to have taken a class like this in high school.

From a technical standpoint, this trip marked our first nature shoot using the FS5, and an early attempt at shooting in S-Log. Although we've learned a lot since then, we're still pretty happy with how the footage turned out.

Also, in a pinch, a garbage bag makes a good rain cover. 😉

Thanks to the Journalistic Learning Initiative and OR Media for this incredible video on the Miller Integrated Nature Experience. Also a big shout out to Paul Engelmeyer, the Portland Audubon Society, and the Ten Mile Creek Sanctuary for hosting us while the video was created.

#DucksGive 2017

Show your #Allen pride today! This year's #DucksGive campaign is about number of donations, so even a small amount helps us reach our goal to provide experiential learning opportunities (such as trips to Cuba, Alaska, Sri Lanka, or NYC) to all of our J-students, not just those who can afford them. If you got a dollar to spare, that will put us one donation closer to unlocking our next challenge gift!

One Day. One Way. #DucksGive.

When you let students spend a trimester reading and writing about what makes them feel connected to the world, not surprisingly they read and write more (and write better)--because they care. #JLI

We are thrilled to announce the launch of our program, the Journalistic Learning Initiative! JLI is a collaboration between the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication and the University of Oregon College of Education, along with numerous other nonprofit and corporate sponsors.

Journalistic Learning (JL) is student-driven learning, a powerful approach that allows young people to take ownership of their education by creating and publishing peer-directed media projects.

JL students create with confidence, communicate with conviction, and take ownership of their learning.

“All day you’re running around in the field. Then you come back, have dinner, talk through someone’s story and read until you go to sleep at 1 or 2. Then you get up in the morning — at 5:30 because the light makes it hard to sleep — and do it all again. It’s totally engaging, exhilarating and exhausting.” - Mark Blaine, Senior Instructor of Journalism
