First movie I saw him in was Major League. Then Shoot to Kill on TV( He and Sidney Poitier My favorite was Platoon (played such a good villain). Happy Belated Birthday Tom! Great 80s actor

Happy 76th birthday to Tom Berenger, born May 31, 1949. The 1980s were a defining decade for Berenger, firmly establishing him as a major presence in Hollywood and laying the foundation for a long, diverse career.

His breakout came in Oliver Stone’s Platoon (1986), where he played the hardened and brutal Staff Sergeant Barnes. The role earned him an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe win, and it remains one of his most talked-about performances. That same intensity and range showed up in The Big Chill and Someone to Watch Over Me, as well as in the cult favorite Eddie and the Cruisers.

Berenger's work in the '80s showed his ability to move between leading man and complex supporting roles, whether in dramas, thrillers, or action films. That versatility carried into the following decades with standout roles in Sniper, Gettysburg, Training Day, and Hatfields & McCoys, which earned him an Emmy. The depth he brought to his 1980s performances helped set the tone for a career that's remained steady and respected across genres and platforms.
