Yesterday, we welcomed Cumberland County Public Schools Superintendent Missy Shores into the studio for Call Flo. She joined us to talk about what’s happening as the semester winds down, including SOL testing at the high school, how snow delays are impacting the testing schedule, winter sports getting underway across the county, and the final half day for students before Christmas break. Missy also shared updates on basketball, wrestling, and the upcoming Cumberland Christmas Tournament.

Walking through a meadow is peaceful. Walking WITH Meadow is pure joy. Meet this week's Green Front Furniture Dog of the Week! 🐶

The perfect combination of beauty and brains, Meadow is a majestic Anatolian Shepherd who was rescued from a rural animal control. At only 8 months and 62lbs, she is expected to be close to 100 pounds at full size.

"I've still got some growing to do," Meadow says cheerfully. "I'd love to do it by your side!"

Meadow has an "old soul" personality that is well mannered and easily handled. She's not interested in being a working dog; she's looking for a family who's ready to pamper her. Pampering doesn't just mean couch cuddles, though—this girl will make a great adventure buddy for an active family!

"I enjoy the finer things in life," she explains, "I can't wait to share them with my forever family."

Meadow's adopters must be homeowners with a fenced yard. If you're looking for a loyal sidekick with adventure in her eyes and love in her bones, she's waiting for you at the Southside SPCA!

Today we were joined by Prince Edward County, Virginia Administrator Doug Stanley and Emergency Management Coordinator Trey Pyle on On Call Flo! They shared a recap of the December Board of Supervisors meeting and provided updates on major progress in county emergency services.

We covered everything from the postponed public hearings on the To***co Trail Solar Project to the County’s 2026 Legislative Priorities, updates on the long-term radio communications system project, and more.

Yesterday on Call Flo, we were thrilled to have Nikki Dean, Jamie Anderson, and Krystle Watkins from Piedmont Senior Resources Area Agency on Aging and the Town of Farmville Parks and Recreation. They shared all the exciting details about Senior Holiday Bingo, which is open to all ages.

The event will take place on Monday, December 15 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the Fireman Sports Arena, 1328 Zion Hill Road, Farmville. Attendees can enjoy bingo games, caroling, vendors, Santa photos, and much more. A big thank you to Nikki, Jamie, and Krystle for joining us. Today we had Justine Young and Geoff Angle from Piedmont Senior Resources Area Agency on Aging on Call Flo to talk about Santa for Seniors 2025. Now in its 10th year, the program has grown from a small project into a regional effort delivering hundreds of winter essential gift bags to homebound seniors. They shared what goes into each bag and explained why rising costs make community support more important than ever.

They also shared great information about Subaru Share the Love Campaign, where Subaru donates up to $300 for every new vehicle purchased or leased, support that directly benefits PSR clients.

Meet Monk, the Green Front Dog of the Week! Monk is more than a pretty face. He’s 80 pounds of pure, slobbery love—and he’s still growing. At just 12 months old, this huggable hunk is already winning hearts with his gentle nature and eagerness to please. Rescued by the Southside SPCA from rural animal control, Monk is now dreaming big: long hikes, cozy couches and a forever home.

“I may be big, but I promise I fit perfectly in your heart," says Monk, "and probably on your lap, too.”

Monk is smart, social and already knows several commands; however, it's important to note that he's still a puppy. Home ownership is required to adopt this sweet boy, and a fenced yard is preferred. His adopter should have large breed experience and the time and financial resources to provide him with positive reinforcement training. He'll definitely need an outlet for his puppy energy, so be ready for outdoor adventures and lots of snuggle time!

“I'm working on my ‘good boy’ skills daily," he says. "I'm a quick learner...especially if snacks are involved.”

This morning Warren Reid stopped by the studio to give us a preview of this Sunday’s Christmas Parade! He shared the new reversed parade route starting near Pino’s and heading toward the DMV, the nighttime start time of 5:30 PM, the return of horses, plenty of candy (distributed safely!), and this year’s futuristic theme: “Christmas of the Future.”

He also announced our two Grand Marshals: Dr. Chip Jones and Coach Ronnie Thomas!

Yesterday on Call Flo we had Steve Smelcer and Kylie Brown from the Southside SPCA join us on the show, where they shared a preview of the Southside SPCA Holiday Gala happening Saturday, December 6 at The Barn at Poor House Farm in Rice. The evening will feature festive food, holiday cocktails, auctions, and more, and guests will even get to meet adoptable puppies.

Steve and Kylie also highlighted their annual holiday drive taking place from 2 to 5 PM at the Holiday Inn Express and Suites, which will include local vendors, raffles, and additional activities. This week's Dog of the Week is short, sweet and the epitome of "man's best friend." Meet Brownie, a 7-year-old collie mix with a heart of gold. 🐶

"They say good things come in small packages—guess that makes me the best thing ever," she says with a smile.

Brownie found herself in a rural animal control facility after her owner became ill. Thanks to the Southside SPCA, she's ready for a new start! She’s gentle, loyal, and loves the company of other dogs. Plus, she’s past the puppy chaos and all about the couch cuddles.

"I used to have a home," says Brownie. "Now I’m hoping to find a heart to belong to."

Brownie weighs around 40 pounds, but she looks even smaller. Think your home needs a little more heart? Head to the Southside SPCA to meet her.
