Floyd County Parks and Recreation recently announced an expanded schedule of programs designed to help older adults stay active, build friendships, and enjoy new experiences throughout the community.

“Our goal is to create consistent opportunities for Floyd County’s seniors to remain active, connected and engaged,” said Floyd County Parks and Recreation Director Jacob Agee.

The four cameras in Floyd County — at Simmons Grocery on Route 8, on the south side of town past OuterSpace, at G.J. Ingram and Son Store, and at the Floyd Laundromat — were covered with pillow cases that were secured with zip ties.

Nearly 27,000 pounds of material left FloydFest for recycling and composting centers, according to the festival's waste contractor, Zero Waste Event Productions (ZWEP). That compares to 41,500 pounds of material sent to the landfill.

During the early morning hours of July 24, Daylan Edgar was seriously injured in a devastating house fire that resulted in him spending nearly four weeks at the Children's Hospital of Richmond at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Between 20% and 25% of Daylan’s body was burned in the late July blaze.

The green boxes on Alum Ridge will be temporarily removed due to bear activity.on Wednesday, Sept. 2.

Floyd County officials provided photos of scattered trash and what appears to be “evidence indicating that an individual (or individuals) may be intentionally attempting to lure or attract bears to the area.”

Floyd County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) officials are planning to cover the four Flock Safety Automatic License Plate Reader (ALPR) cameras in Floyd County if they are not removed by the end of this week.

The contract between Flock and Floyd County officially ends on Friday, Sept. 4, at which time FCSO officers will be “completely locked out” of the system and unable to search its stored data.

During the public comment period of last week's Floyd Town Council meeting, town resident and Council hopeful David Whitaker said the presence of the bus at OuterSpace goes against Town Code and suggested it be removed.

Whitaker said that the bus at OuterSpace is a “glaring example” of the Miscellaneous Offenses listed in Chapter 10 of the Town’s Code.
