In the words of Dr. Largmann in an interview with The Classic from 2001, “‘School is a work in progress. It goes on and on.’ The real test is of his own success, he said, is that of time, ‘whether it can continue beyond you.’” For our final coverage on the legacy and life of Dr. Largmann, we are sharing The Classic’s coverage of his retirement as Principal in 2001. Below is a word from former Editor-in-Chief Alan Fu, as well as testimonies from past students and teachers under him and a segment on the career of Dr. Largmann. As said by Alan Fu in the article, “I see how Dr. Largmann truly shaped today’s Townsend Harris in that he embodies everything that the school stands for: care and compassion in its educators, and challenging and expecting excellence from its students in order to make them better people.”

Today, as a continuation of our posts in memory of Dr. Malcolm Largmann, original principal of the re-opened THHS, we are sharing the original Classic Charter. In 2000, Dr. Largmann signed a charter for The Classic, recognizing the publication rights as a free and open platform. Below is a scan of the original copy of the charter that Dr. Largmann signed as well as our coverage from 2000.

In remembering Dr. Largmann, Ilsa Cowen, advisor of The Classic from 1988 to 2009, shared the following: “[All new Classic Editors] came to know that, unlike so many other principals at the time, [Dr. Largmann] did not subject their work to censorship. Dr. Largmann's willingness to accord freedom of the press to The Classic led to Townsend Harris becoming a nationally recognized First Amendment school, and when he retired, he agreed to sign a charter that would ensure that the school's future journalists would enjoy the same free press rights. The charter sets forth both these rights and students' responsibilities.”

Arlene Laverde | Movers & Shakers 2021–Advocates

School Librarian Arlene Laverde was recently featured in the Library Journal for her work in highlighting the importance of librarians in schools. Ms. Laverde was a key advocate in the passing of a recent resolution that recognizes librarians as essential members in the school community, and pushes to mandate school librarians in every school library in New York State.

From the THHS Alumni Association:
We are saddened to inform you of the passing of founding principal Malcolm G. Largmann. Dr. Largmann passed away peacefully in his home last night.

Dr. Largmann was instrumental in the reestablishment of Townsend Harris in 1984, having been the first person hired after the decision to reopen the school after over 40 years of closure. His leadership led to Townsend Harris quickly becoming one of the best high schools in the state, achieving a “National School of Education” designation within five years of its opening. He was loved by faculty, parents and students. He was an outstanding educator and humanitarian. Prior to leading Townsend Harris, Dr. Largmann was an English teacher and department chair at Lafayette High School and Tilden High School. He retired from Townsend Harris in 2001 after a 40+ year career.

We will be having a memorial service in the near future where Dr. Largmann’s friends and family can pay their respects. We will keep you posted.

Please see the below video where Dr. Largmann discusses his time at Townsend Harris.

A number of other New York City public high schools have have similar "bridge year" programs, these include the High School of American Studies at Lehman College, Queens High School for the Sciences at York College, and Bard High School Early College. Were any of these cut like THHS? This is a story worth telling!
THHS Classic writers....have you seen this article? You might want to investigate Chancellor Richard Carranza's intention in canceling the Bridge Program.

Someone should update this article... if the mens' baseball team wins their remaining games, they'll be in the playoffs. (if not they won't, but there is a good chance they can). It could happen the way they are playing these last few games.
