After John Browers death from an opioid overdose at age 25 in 2014, friends came to the Browers with stories of the ways in which their son had helped them, often without ever telling anyone.

His parents turned that devastating loss into a mission. The John Brower Jr. Foundation was established in his memory, and this year the family will host its 11th annual Heroes Against He**in 5K Walk at Jones Beach State Park on Sept. 12.

For many Levittown parents, getting children to school in the morning is a race against the clock, with crowded roads, tight schedules and the pressure of getting children to school before heading off to work.

A new national survey has now put the Levittown school district’s commute among the most stressful in the country, ranking it No. 5.

The survey, conducted by A Mission for Michael (AMFM), a mental health treatment provider, surveyed 3,044 parents to identify the areas with the most stressful school runs. This survey examined the factors that make school drop-off and pickup stressful, including traffic congestion, fear of being late, unsafe driving, parking difficulties and the pressure of getting to work afterward.

For Ayden Parris, a fifth grader at Polk Street School in Franklin Square, the sport of diving is more than learning how to twist, flip and enter the water — it's taken him across the country, introduced him to friends from different states and, this summer, helped him reach the top of the podium.

The 10-year-old won the USA Diving Junior Nationals in the 1-meter and 3-meter events this summer, adding to a series of strong finishes that have made for a most memorable year.

Phil Onesto has experienced South Side football from nearly every angle — as a player, a captain, a champion and, eventually, a coach who led the Cyclones back to a county title.

His connection to the program began when he was a freshman in 1998. Three years later, he graduated as a senior captain on South Side’s 2001 county championship team. Over two decades after that championship victory, Onesto stood on the sideline and coached the Cyclones to another county title in 2023.

Now, as South Side prepares to open its 100th football season at home Sept. 9 against Elmont, Onesto is beginning his 16th season as head coach — a link to some of the program’s most memorable chapters.

When Christopher Ortiz graduated from Glen Cove High School in 1992, several local police officers repeatedly encouraged him to take the civil service exam.

Among them was Detective Sgt. Rob Kamaski, who had coached Ortiz on the junior varsity football team, and Detective Lt. John Nagle, who lived near him.
“Take the police test, take the police test,” Ortiz recalled hearing.

Now Glen Cove’s police chief, Ortiz, 52, is delivering the same message to a new generation as the city accepts applications for its entry-level police officer exam. It is open to those ages 18 to 45, and registration must be completed by Sept. 11.
