Mary Peltola has moved from Alaska’s lone U.S. House seat into one of the country’s most closely watched Senate contests. The former congresswoman advanced from Alaska’s August primary alongside incumbent Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan and other candidates. Recent results showed Peltola leading the primary field with roughly 48 percent of the vote, while Sullivan had about 43 percent.
Peltola, who is Yup’ik, made history in 2022 as the first Alaska Native elected to Congress. Her Senate campaign now places Native representation at the center of another major statewide race. The November result is far from settled, but Alaska has become a Senate battleground that both parties are watching closely.

Never ever seen this before.

This little robin has been a regular in my garden for years. Today was watching him hopping around on the patio picking up seed.

Then he just sat there for a bit and his head drooped down and he just … died. No trauma. Nothing. Just slipped away.

Georgina Lightning, trailblazing Cree filmmaker, actor, writer and producer, has passed away at 63.

A member of Samson Cree Nation, Lightning built a career spanning more than three decades in film and television. Her daughter, actor and musician Crystle Lightning, confirmed her passing Saturday.

“I have lost my mother, my sons Kohkum, my matriarch, my role model, my confidant,” Crystle shared.

Lightning was best known for the 2008 feature Older Than America, which she wrote, directed, produced and starred in, inspired in part by her family’s experiences with residential and boarding schools.

Her other screen credits included Johnny Greyeyes, DreamKeeper, Blackstone, Trickster, Three Pines and Alaska Daily.

Lightning passed away following an incident during an Indian relay event at Enoch Cree Nation. The Nation said authorities are investigating and asked that the privacy of the family and community be respected.

Tributes and expressions of heartbreak have spread across Indigenous film, media and community circles following news of her passing.

We extend our deepest condolences to Georgina Lightning’s children, grandchildren, relatives, loved ones, the Samson Cree Nation, and all those grieving her loss.
