Stand-up comedy isn’t brutal because the audience is cruel.
It’s brutal because the stage tells the truth immediately.

In this Forward Times feature, Cultural Writer DeVaughn Douglas sits with Houston-based comedian Jeff Shelley to explore what happens before the highlight clips and after the virality fades.

From weekly amateur nights to a growing online audience, Shelley explains why patience, repetition, and silence are essential to the craft.

America no longer wakes up to headlines — it wakes up to fallout.

In this in-depth national analysis, Stacy M. Brown reports on a fatal Immigration and Customs Enforcement shooting in Minneapolis and places it within a broader pattern of domestic escalation and foreign aggression shaping the current political landscape.

As federal officials, city leaders, and state authorities dispute what unfolded, the article raises urgent questions about the use of force, transparency, and who bears the cost when policy turns volatile.

118 years of service, scholarship, and sisterhood 💚

On Founder’s Day, we honor Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, founded in 1908 at Howard University, and their continued commitment to community impact.

That legacy was on full display during the “We Are One” MLK Day of Service in North Houston, where Divine Nine organizations came together to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. not just with reflection, but with action.

From thousands of donated essentials to handwritten notes of hope, this was unity in motion.

Houston-area voters will have little downtime at the polls in early 2026.

By the end of June, Harris County is expected to hold at least five elections, including special elections, runoffs, and the March primary—placing Houston among the most active local election cycles in recent memory.

Several high-stakes races are on the ballot, including the Harris County Judge seat, multiple Houston City Council positions, and a uniquely complex special election in Texas’ 18th Congressional District following the passing of Sylvester Turner.

According to University of Houston political science professor Nancy Sims, while frequent elections can lead to voter fatigue, lower turnout increases the impact of each individual vote—making civic participation more critical than ever.

As election dates approach quickly, residents are encouraged to stay informed and engaged as decisions made in 2026 will shape Houston’s future for years to come.

This piece explores why extreme diets feel appealing, how shame fuels burnout, and what it means to build health that fits into real life—long after January ends.
