Forward Times is officially welcoming Juli McShay, civic educator, government professor and host of “Pretty Petty Politics,” into an editorial partnership built to make politics accessible ahead of a consequential election season.

Lenora Small writes about the woman behind the “beauty shop, barbershop talk” approach to civics, and why she believes every election, not just the presidential ones, deserves the same attention.

“Every election is a championship,” McShay said.

He followed her on Twitter for one reason: she tweeted about Pokémon.

That gamer, actor Khleo Thomas, later called her about a trademark issue, and Daphne Benford Smith became his attorney.

Forward Times Cultural Writer DeVaughn Douglas traces how Smith built an entertainment law career around the genuine communities she’s part of, from anime and gaming conventions like DreamCon to years spent showing up as herself rather than pitching legal services.

That approach eventually became Sync Legal PLLC, her own firm serving creatives, entrepreneurs and small businesses.

“I feel like with adulthood, sometimes, there’s this push to lose your whimsy,” Smith said. “You can incorporate your interests into your practice of law.”

UnitedHealth Group generates about 40% of its revenue, roughly $180 billion, from transactions between its own subsidiaries.

Former DNC chair Howard Dean says that’s exactly the kind of consolidation Democrats should be running against this midterm cycle.

In a new op-ed, Dean makes the case for Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s Break Up Big Medicine Act, arguing that breaking up healthcare conglomerates that steer patients toward their own hospitals, pharmacies and providers could meaningfully lower costs.

He points to polling showing nearly 7 in 10 insured Americans want lower out-of-pocket costs or an end to prior authorization requirements as their top healthcare priority.

Barry Chautin was initially told he had six to 12 months to live.

A year later, his PSA test came back with no detectable evidence of cancer.

In recognition of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Lenora Small shares the 66-year-old Houston-area survivor’s story alongside the numbers every Black man should know.

One in six Black men will develop prostate cancer in his lifetime, compared to one in eight white men, and Black men are more than twice as likely to die from the disease.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation recommends Black men start talking with their doctor about screening around age 40.

“I tell all my friends to get checked,” Chautin said. “Stay positive and trust your care team.”

Juli McShay breaks down Houston’s $50 million deal with The Woodlands in her own words, and she’s not convinced the city came out ahead.

Her argument: The Woodlands is a fast-growing area, and walking away from decades of rising sales tax revenue for a flat $50 million means Houston likely left real money on the table.

“To assume that the Woodlands will suddenly stop growing and their tax rate would change, that’s just foolish.”

The City of Houston gave up the possibility of ever annexing The Woodlands.

In exchange, the city got $50 million, and a fight between two of its top officials.

Juli McShay breaks down the deal City Council approved 13-1, and the disagreement it sparked between Controller Chris Hollins and Mayor John Whitmire.

Hollins says Houston is trading away a recurring revenue stream worth as much as $173 million over the next three decades.

Mayor Whitmire says that projection is speculative, and certainty today matters more than a hypothetical decades out.

McShay finds merit on both sides, and one unresolved question underneath it all.

“The Woodlands received certainty. The question Houston may not be able to answer for years is whether it charged enough.”
