Today is the first day of Kwanzaa, an annual celebration of African-American culture from December 26 to January 1, culminating in a communal feast called Karamu.

The seven principles which form its core were drawn from communitarian values found throughout the African continent. These principles are:
- Umoja (Unity)
- Kujichagulia (Self-Determination)
- Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility)
- Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics)
- Nia (Purpose)
- Kuumba (Creativity)
- Imani (Faith)

Sending you and your family Kwanzaa blessings!

Announcing Our Teachers of the Year!
Congratulations to our Cville Schools Teachers of the Year! These outstanding educators will be recognized at the January School Board meeting, when the division will announce which teacher will represent Cville Schools in the state's teacher of the year competition.

How lucky are we to have such great schools and teachers in Charlottesville?!

It's the beginning of winter, the shortest day of the year and from here on out we'll get a little more sun each day! The word "solstice" comes from the Latin words "sol" (sun) and "sistere" (to stand still). It's called this because the sun's path across the sky appears to pause before reversing direction.

Fun Fact: On the winter solstice, your midday shadow is your longest shadow of the entire year!

Hey moms, we see you. We see all the work you put in to create Christmas magic and we think you deserve to take a breather. So while you're shopping, wrapping, cooking, and coming up with new schemes for your Elf on the Shelf, remember these things:

- Your best is enough.
You don't have to be perfect, you don't need to live up to any one else's expectations, and you don't need to be comparing yourself to others.

- Presence over presents.
Toys and gadgets will come and go, memories last a lifetime.

- Don't try to do it all- delegate.
Older kids can help wrap for the littles, everyone can help cook and clean, and your partner should be doing their fair share too.

- Enjoy the little things.
Often it's not the chaotic vacation or extravagant events and meals that are most cherished. Enjoy being in each other's company, watching a movie on the couch together, and playing silly games.

- It's your Christmas too.
It's easy to get caught up in making sure your kids have the perfect Christmas, but don't forget it's your holiday too. Make time to do your favorite things and have fun without the pressure of making it special for everyone else.

- Rest is productive.
Take a break mom. Seriously, put down the wrapping paper, the whisk, or whatever else you have going on and just relax. You can't get it all done without taking time to recharge, and you certainly won't enjoy your holiday if you're running on empty.
