Beach days and good books. Name a better combo.
This one’s been in my bag all week, sandy edges and all. What are you reading this summer?

Paris apartments are known for their high ceilings and light-filled rooms, but a bookcase 11 shelves high takes the classical feel to a new level. Where the ladder is kept, we can only guess. Home library in the gorgeous Paris apartment of designer Jacques Garcia, recently featured in .

Weekend vibe. I’ve been ordering books all week for two projects (one on each coast). Ready to dive back into my own (Amor Towles, Table for Two) and figure out what I’m onto next.

Bookstores big and small, new, used, rare, independent and even corporate always give me new ideas. Foxtail Books sources new material for home library projects directly from publishers, so I’m usually not actually shopping when I’m browsing new bookshops like Rizzoli in NYC, I’m looking for beautiful and interesting books that are not yet on my radar. I try to always buy something when I make these stops, a book for myself, some stationary, a tote. It’s the least I can do towards ensuring browsing bookstores continue to thrive.

Where literature meets design. The best books out there on your particular interests, installed to be beautiful and accessible in your space. Pictured here, one of our earliest curated home libraries, built for a family in Jackson, Wyoming. We filled 4 walls of shelves about 50% to allow room for growth in years to come.

Luxury shopping that feels like a grand museum or a modern gallery installation. New York is always good for research and inspiration in terms of books, but I also come here to see what’s new in design, customer experience, and luxury branding. did not disappoint.

The French chain recently opened a location at One Wall Street — advertisements around the city boldly claim “Not a Department Store.” It absolutely is a department store, but it’s not your grandmother’s Macy’s. Grand mosaics, hand-painted murals, and endless details creatively drawn in glass, tile, woodworking, and stone — I hardly looked at the products, I was so overwhelmed taking in the space.

If you go: evidently there are often lines just to get in the door, but it was quiet at the very end of their open hours on the rainy Monday I stopped by. Still hard to get a seat in the beautiful cafe (though the champagne bar had a stool free 🥂).

Not a bad stop to feel like you’re in both the Gilded Age and perhaps some futuristic shop off the Champs-Élysées. Last photo from the NYT, all others

Patron Saint of the Private Librarian. Such a pleasure to learn more about Belle Da Costa Greene, the private librarian to Pierpont Morgan who developed what would become one of the world’s most important collections of rare books and manuscripts.

It’s a large exhibit, including Greene’s family, career, personal life, and treasures she secured for the collection. My favorite, though, were the quotes. “My friends in England suggest that I be called
‘Keeper of Printed Books and Manuscripts’ ... but you know they have such long titles in London.
I’m simply a librarian.” - Greene in the New York Times, April 7, 1912

The last photo is a set of a set of books that were either owned by Greene herself or examples of her favorites.

Only a few days left to catch this exhibit at - it closes May 4, a week from Sunday. What a brave, brilliant woman, and a fascinating life. Link in profile to more information about Greene and the exhibit. .

“To read in bed is to draw around us invisible, noiseless curtains. Then at last we are in a room of our own and are ready to burrow back, back to that private life of the imagination we all led as a child and to whose secret satisfactions so many of us have mislaid the key. ― Clifton Fadiman

Just discovered this marvelous series by UK artist - I can practically feel the sheets. How can one feel so seen by a painting?

The only thing better than working surrounded by books is to have a pup or two in the library with you. It seems of lot of the book people we work for are also dog people.

While they (the dogs, not their people) are terrible at interrupting, are known to knock over a pile, and make me nervous around rare books, they’re also excellent company for the solo private librarian.

Not pictured: the couple of beloved books I’ve encountered through the years that were damaged by puppies but kept nevertheless.

Starring our very own Batman (who regularly uses books as a pillow), but also including Winston, Katie, Olivia, Tequila, Shep, Banjo, Maddy, and two I can’t seem to remember for the life of me. Batman’s official portrait by

(There are also some bookish cat people out there! I promise to dredge my photos for the cats next).

Were you a Tintin kid? French first editions of The Adventures of Tintin, by Belgian cartoonist Hergé. These just arrived from Paris, if any booksellers out there have a strong French inventory, we’re still on the hunt for the rest of the series to complete this client’s collection :)

I’m Christy, owner and principal librarian here at Foxtail Books. We curate, manage, organize, and problem solve for home libraries and private collections around the world.

Pardon my brief Insta-break, it’s been busy around here! In fact 2024 was our busiest year yet. We built beautiful and meaningful collections as far east as Washington D.C., as far west as California, and of course a few here in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, our home base.

For those who have asked: we’ve had several projects in Pasadena and Pacific Palisades through the years, including some collections of very rare books. I was relieved for my clients to learn that their homes all survived the fires (some by the skin of their teeth), but I think the coverage from L.A. has us all considering our belongings, the everyday and the precious things that make up our homes and our lives. So very many things that can never be replaced. Much of my work involves caring for small objects that are meaningful to people in their homes. But I have no wisdom to impart on that front, only a shared sadness for all of the loss.

I promise not to disappear into the ether for the rest of 2025. There are sure to be more libraries, books, and stories to share. Thanks for joining me.
