I saw the golden, warm light of Appalachian summer evening shining through the apartment windows and I said “it’s beautiful! We should go outside!”

I walked onto the patio, started checking out the plants, and then looked up and gasped, crying out to my family — the most perfect rainbow I have ever seen in my life!!! Thank you to whatever magic power literally called me to be outside just in time to see this.

A Note From Chels at Rednecks Rising

Hi friends! Chels here to share an ask on behalf of my friend, Virgo — an amazing comrade and disaster relief rapid responder.

Virgo is literally the reason I was connected to Mutual Aid Disaster Relief after Helene. This human, who I had known from years prior when we worked at the same organization, reached out IMMEDIATELY after the storm to ask me what we needed and to reassure me that there was help on the way.

Virgo is the one who talked me down from a tearful panic attack in the first few days after the storm, when I sent them a voice memo of me sobbing over the communications infrastructure failure and the impact it was having on our ability to coordinate and mobilize. Virgo is a big reason I feel so deeply held and in strong reciprocal relationship with our kindred in the Triangle of NC.

I owe this human on a spiritual level; I owe them my hope, my faith, my sense of connection to a mycelium network of care. Now, I get to ask you to help me nurture them the way that they have nurtured us in Western NC, and nurtured folks in other countless regions that have experienced similar disasters. I am hard pressed to think of many people that embody the idea of “solidarity” more than this person. Let us be the mirror to reflect all that they pour, back into them!

After over 300k miles, their trusty Sante Fe (affectionately known as Sandy) has broken down beyond repair. Sandy was a lifeline for Virgo’s work and commitments, and was so much more than just transportation. Their vehicle is their means for earning an income and assisting others in need — whether it’s delivering groceries, helping a local mutual aid project, or traveling to a recently hit disaster zone to deliver supplies and aid. Beyond transportation, Sandy has also served as a mobile home after some DIY conversion work, providing Virgo with a space to rest during long nights in disaster zones.

Our goal is to raise $7,000 so that Virgo can purchase a vehicle that will get them back on the road, ready to respond and tackle any terrain, as well as open up new opportunities.

Help us reach our goal at https://spot.fund/VirgoOnTheMove

Today is THE DAY! We need ALL HANDS ON DECK in Haywood County!
📢📢📢
Commissioner meeting TONIGHT.
5:00pm to make comment.
5:30pm agenda starts.
Haywood County Courthouse.
Wear RED for ed!
🍎🍎🍎
County commissioners are determining the budget and right now our kids are getting the 💩 end of the stick!!!

Key takeaways from the current budget proposal:

📌 7% property tax increase
➡️ half of the increase is to fund the new jail expansion (2.3% for construction debt, 1.5% for operating costs)

📌 public safety is highest line item, schools come in third

📌 schools requested $3 million increase from county, JUST TO SURVIVE WITHOUT CUTTING CRITICAL POSITIONS/PROGRAMS
➡️ current proposal grants less than half ($1.25 million)
➡️ forcing the schools to make cuts, meanwhile sheriff gets fancy new toy bearcat and 140 new jail beds!?!?

📌 14 teaching positions are on the line without adequate funding. But 8 new positions for the jail are being funded.

📌 multiple factors got to this point:
➡️ federal funding cuts directly impacted available funds for county spending
➡️ unfunded mandates from “Big Beautiful Bill” forcing the county to fund 9 new HHS positions
➡️ projected costs of the detention center doubled since the project was introduced in 2020
➡️ county procrastinated tax increases for years, culminating in a delayed and dramatic increase to catch up with increasing costs

Our demands:
💰💰 Fully funded Haywood County School System!
🚫🎁 No new toys for the sheriff department until the schools can pay their bills.

📌May 18th 5:00pm Haywood County Courthouse. WEAR RED.📌

One of the Dads that joined yesterday’s teach-in was taking notes, then the notes organically morphed into a manifesto. This is our collective message, authored by Nate, to county leadership, which will be shared on Monday:

A message from Save Haywood County Schools Teach-In — May 18th 5:00pm Haywood County Courthouse. WEAR RED.

Dear County,

Haywood Co. school system is facing a $1.8 million funding gap while the detention center expansion will cost us tens of millions of dollars.

The proposed “inflation budget” is a result of the Big Beautiful Bill and rising costs due to the war in Iran. Inaction from our school board should be noted because this crisis was years in the making. State and federal reps manufactured our crisis with burdensome laws without the funding to back the up.

Education is not a priority for this deliberative body, because this is the breakdown for the proposed budget:
🚔54% increase for incarceration
🧑‍🏫21% increase to teach our kids

We need to make a collective decision for our future. Let’s start by putting pressure on Chuck Edwards and Mark Pless. Tell them: this war, this prez, this voucher program is k!ll!ng us.

Tonight, we ask you to fully fund our schools. Tell the sheriff to return the bearcat. Let’s meet this funding gap by putting education first. The superintendent of HCS says “we are at a critical juncture.” HCS daycare staff say funding is a statewide crisis.

We the people do not have the funds to keep our own households afloat yet we find ourselves volunteering in the garden at our schools because we know the return on investing in our kids is priceless. Show us you agree:
- Keep the early college open
- Don’t eliminate AP courses
- Teach music and art

Know this— we are a collective of voices rooted in the community. We are moms, gardeners, activists, neighbors, and candidates for local and state office. We are organized and ready to rebuild public education with a budget that reflects mountain values ➡️
- affordable housing
- classrooms not jail cells
- gardens for food not data centers for war

Haywood County’s budget proposal for the upcoming year does not measure up for our public schools!

Increasing our property taxes to fund a jail expansion while letting our schools fend for themselves with 14 teaching positions on the chopping block is absolute insanity.

Now is the time to make your voice heard! Join your community for this teach-in so we can show up informed and in numbers at the Public Hearing on the budget. The teach-in will cover basic information about the county budget proposal, tax rate increases, and schools. The teach-in is taking place at the Kiwanis park — meaning KIDS ARE WELCOME! Bring them out to play while we parents come together to fight for their future. The teach-in is on Saturday, May 16th, starting at 3pm.

The Public Hearing is taking place on Monday, May 18th at 5:30pm at the Haywood County Courthouse.

This teach-in is organized by concerned parents of Haywood County and is NOT hosted by the county government or any government officials, political campaigns, or political organizations.

Blessed Beltane ❤️‍🔥🌸 and Full Moon in Scorpio! 🌕♏️🦂🌀 // Happy May Day, the original Labor Day, and Blessed Be this day of the General Strike! 🔥

On this day, 140 years ago, the American Federation of Labour proclaimed by resolution that “eight hours shall constitute a legal day’s labour.” Workers came together across race, language, and cultural barriers in the months leading up to that date—drawn into the struggle for a shorter workday.

The day that the resolution took effect, hundreds of thousands of workers were out in the streets on strike. Chicago was the epicenter, where 40,000 workers were striking, with anarchists in the forefront of the public’s eye. The names of many—Albert Parsons, Johann Most, August Spies and Louis Lingg—became household words in Chicago and throughout the country. Parades, bands and tens of thousands of demonstrators in the streets exemplified the workers’ strength and unity.

Two days later, May 3, 1886, workers called for a public meeting to address escalating police brutality and the murder of two striking workers that occurred the day prior. Police marched on the meeting, a bomb was thrown, and police began shooting into the crowd, killing an estimated seven or eight civilians, and wounding up to forty.

Eight anarchists—Albert Parsons, August Spies, Samuel Fielden, Oscar Neebe, Michael Schwab, George Engel, Adolph Fischer and Louis Lingg—were arrested and convicted of murder, though only three were even present at Haymarket and those three were in full view of all when the bombing occurred. On November 11, 1887, after many failed appeals, Parsons, Spies, Engel and Fisher were hung to death.

Ironically, May Day is an official holiday in 66 countries and unofficially celebrated in many more, but rarely is it recognized in this country where it began.

May all Martyrs be honored and may all systems of oppression and cruelty crumble and succumb to the fire of transformation; may their ashes be used as compost, alchemized for tending to the fields of a new reality that yearns to blossom.

An Ask from Chels at Rednecks Rising

Hi friends! I am once again reaching out to the community about support. This time for a neighbor who is passionate, outspoken, smart, and dedicated to improving life for himself and others with disabilities (and without disabilities)! Keep reading for more about this powerful human.

This is my friend Trevor. Some of y’all are familiar with Trevor, because you have been impacted by his leadership or his friendship, or because you listened to him on the show back in episode 24 (visit our website/most streaming platforms to listen). If you haven’t gotten the chance to cross paths yet, I hope you do sooner rather than later.

Trevor is blind/visually impaired and has been fighting tooth and nail, working harder than most folks I know, to get through school so that he can step into a career where his impact will be able to grow and ripple out even farther. I’ve watched him complete an Associate’s and Bachelor’s, and now he is enrolled in a Graduate Program!

In the last couple of weeks, Trevor had to sign a lease for a new place on campus and the security deposit has really left him struggling. It’s a much better place that will allow him to do an internship at CAPS on campus (counseling and psychology services), with greater accessibility and ease — but the security deposit was $800 and he lives on a fixed income due to his disability, so this was a huge financial burden for Trev.

If you could throw in $10-20 to help Trev keep food on the table for a night or two over the next couple of weeks, it would be more appreciated than I could even explain.

If you can’t donate, please share! Anything helps!

🚨WE NEED YOU! Duke Energy is up to their usual shenanigans…

In case you haven’t heard, Duke Energy is trying to raise utility rates by nearly 20%. The utilities commission is holding a public hearing tonight at the Haywood County Courthouse starting at 7pm.

You will want to arrive and be seated very early in order to make a comment — but we need ALL HANDS ON DECK to make a comment against the rate hikes. We’ve defeated Duke before in 2017 and we can do it again tonight.

I will arrive by 6pm and am happy to help folks shape a public comment if you would like to contribute! I will be wearing black striped pants and will have flyers with me.

Also considering organizing future ongoing meetings for neighbors who want to be a part of coming together and exercising our collective power against things like this, the data centers, etc. — let me know if that’s something that you would be interested in so I can made a decision based on capacity and enthusiasm! (This would be predominantly for folks in/willing to travel to Haywood County).

And yes, I did borrow the “friends and neighbors” greeting from 😂❤️

Hey y’all — from WNC to ETN to SWVA, our mountains are under threat, and this is especially true right now for our neighbors down the mountain in eastern TN. I will be throwing together an essay up on substack about this, this week I hope.

Basically BWXT just successfully lobbied a rural county commission in eastern TN (Jonesborough) to rezone an area with the intent to process high purity depleted uranium for manufacturing specifically for nuclear warheads. If you’ve ever heard of Three Mile Island… yes, that BWXT. It you haven’t heard of TMI, please go read about it.

The company has already admitted their processing will release ~250 pounds of radioactive uranium dust into the air annually and they anticipate processing 300 metric tons of uranium.

Last night, Washington County Commissioners voted to approve the rezoning in Jonesborough — despite the fact that it violates Washington County’s Comprehensive Plan, which expressly calls for compatibility between adjacent land uses, the protection of agricultural and residential areas from industrial encroachment, and the preservation of environmentally sensitive lands and flood plains.

The proposed facility is upriver from the Nolichucky (calling all boaters!!!!), is within 5 miles of 3 schools, and within 50 miles of Asheville… so if there were any accident we would be in an imminent disaster area.

I wrote about the history of Appalachia as a perpetual, state-sanctioned disaster zone in the final issue of .mag — this is just another example of a long, violent history. Appalachians refuse to allow our bodies or mountains to be sacrificed in service of rich men’s wars and imperial violence.

From the holler to the sea, I got you and you got me. Please share and tell everyone you can about this and fight back!

More information and ways to act can be found at protectjonesborough dot com — I’ll add this to my bio.

Also if you know who made these graphics please tag the for me, please and thanks!
