To the moms who show up every day, even when they are tired. To the grandmothers, stepmoms, foster moms, aunties, sisters and friends who help raise, guide and protect.
To the women who love with patience, carry more than most people see, and somehow still find a way to give.

Thank you.

Mother’s Day is not just about perfect cards or perfect families. It is about recognizing the people who helped shape us, comfort us, challenge us and believe in us.

Today, we celebrate them with gratitude, honesty and love. Happy Mother’s Day.

We want to sincerely apologize—KFMJ is currently off the air due to circumstances outside of our control.

Our broadcast tower is located on a high mountain, which means repairs require flying in an engineer and waiting for a safe weather window to access the site once he arrives. We’re actively working to get everything back up and running as quickly as possible, but it may take a little time.

In the meantime, you can still listen to your favorite KFMJ programming:

-On the Ketchikan Radio Center app
-Online at: https://alaskafirstmedia.com/kfmjfm/

We truly appreciate your patience and support, we’ll keep you updated as soon as we know more.

The winter weather advisories for Prince of Wales Island, Ketchikan, and Annette Island have been extended through Saturday morning at 10 AM due to the anticipation of a longer-duration snow event.

We are expecting hit-or-miss snow showers to continue into the weekend, which could bring as little as 6 inches and as much as 15 inches of snow to the southern panhandle from Thursday until Saturday. Total snow accumulations will depend heavily on daytime temperatures, with highs looking to reach into the upper 30s to low 40s. High daytime temperatures combined with the increased sun angle may limit overall snow accumulations or turn precipitation to a rain/snow mix, especially near the coast. Showers are expected to diminish into Sunday.

The winter weather advisories can be viewed here: https://forecast.weather.gov/product.php?site=NWS&issuedby=AJK&product=WSW&format=txt&version=1&glossary=0

🚒 Breaking News: Even the Chief Can’t Fix Everything With Duct Tape.

Last night, KFD responded to a reported fuel leak… at the Chief’s house.

Yes.
The.
Chief’s.
House.

Turns out his fuel oil tank decided it had enough of Southeast Alaska rain, salt air, and general life choices and developed a small hole in the bottom. Because of course it did.

Crews quickly mitigated the leak and contacted the U.S. Coast Guard MSD and Alaska DEC to make sure everything was handled properly and our waters stay as clean as our “liquid sunshine” allows. 🌧️

The good news: minimal impact.
The better news: the Chief will never live this down.

Friendly reminder to check your fuel tanks periodically for rust, soft spots, or leaks — especially in our charming rainforest corrosion laboratory we call home. If it can happen to the Fire Chief, it can happen to anyone.

Stay dry(ish), Ketchikan.

A large boulder fell overnight alongside the tunnel on Water Street. COK Public Works Streets checked the area and there doesn’t appear to be a risk of additional rock falls. Since this area is ADOT responsibility, we are contacting them to follow up on potential removal of debris.

🚨🌧️🌀 SOUTHEAST ALASKA WEATHER ALERT: THE SKY HAS CHOSEN VIOLENCE 🌀🌧️🚨

An atmospheric river is sliding into the Panhandle late Thursday through Saturday, bringing snow, rain, wind, and a personal vendetta against storm drains.

What’s on the menu:
• Snow that immediately regrets its life choices and turns into rain
• 1–4 inches of rain (locally: more, because of course)
• Deep snowpack = clogged drains = “Why is there a lake here?”
• Creeks rising fast and hills thinking about moving

🌬️ Wind Update
South winds 25–35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph, strong enough to:
• Yeet your trash cans
• Reorganize your yard
• Cancel electricity
• Test every knot you tied while saying “that’s probably fine”

🪁 DO. NOT. FLY. A. KITE.
This is not kite weather.
This is “your kite files for independence and moves to Prince of Wales Island” weather.
Also, power lines exist. Let’s not meet them professionally.

👨‍🚒 KFD Survival Tips
• Clear storm drains.
• Tie down anything you like or would miss
• Expect flooding, power outages, and bad decisions by gravity
• If water starts going places it shouldn’t—call early

We’ll be out there riding the chaos so you don’t have to.
Stay dry, stay grounded, and keep your kites indoors. 😉
