A big crowd at Sands’ homecoming night out at Ackerly got its money’s worth then some. After dropping their season opener at Hermleigh, the Mustangs have now won three straight counting last Friday’s homecoming, 53-0 over Loraine.

The quick-starting Klondike Cougars are off to a 4-0 start this fall after thumping the Whiteface Antelopes, 56-9, in a game stopped at the half on six-man footall’s 45-point mercy rule last Friday night at Jim and Pat Nance Field.

It took only 30 minutes and six unanimous votes for Lamesa school board members to hire a consulting firm to assist in the search for a new school superintendent. The seventh school board member, Cindy Martinez, was absent from the meeting.

City officials notified drivers about roadway closures to accommodate construction projects. Construction is currently underway at the intersection of US 87 and SH 349.

A large plume of smoke was visible from town mid-Monday afternoon. An apparent controlled burn got out of hand and spread over pasture land and cedar trees about 10 miles north of town along County Road O. Lamesa firefighters doused the blaze and utilized county maintainers to lay down three wide trenches to stop the spread and keep the blaze from jumping over to further ignition spots. O’Donnell firefighters were standing by in the event more assistance was needed.
