I REMARRIED AFTER LOSING MY WIFE — BUT WHEN I CAME HOME FROM A BUSINESS TRIP, MY DAUGHTER WHISPERED, “DADDY, NEW MOM ACTS DIFFERENT WHEN YOU’RE NOT HERE.”
Two years had gone by since my wife passed away before I finally decided to marry again. My five-year-old daughter, Sophie, and I moved into Amelia’s family home, which she had inherited from her parents. In the beginning, Amelia seemed kind and caring, bringing warmth and happiness back into our lives.
After spending a week away on a business trip, I returned home, and Sophie immediately wrapped her arms around me. Then she quietly said, “DADDY, NEW MOM IS DIFFERENT WHEN YOU’RE GONE.” There was something in her voice that instantly made me uneasy.
“What do you mean, sweetheart?” I asked softly, crouching down so I could look directly into her eyes.
“She keeps locking herself in the attic,” Sophie explained. “I HEAR STRANGE SOUNDS UP THERE. IT SCARES ME. SHE TELLS ME I’M NOT ALLOWED TO GO INSIDE. AND… SHE’S MEAN TO ME.”
My concern grew. “Why do you think she’s being mean?” I asked. Sophie frowned before answering. “She makes me clean my room all by myself, and she never lets me eat ice cream anymore, even when I’ve been really good.”
Suddenly, I remembered how often Amelia had disappeared into the attic lately. Until that moment, I had assumed it was simply a private place where she could relax and spend time alone. But after hearing Sophie’s words, doubts began creeping into my mind. Had I overlooked something important? Had marrying Amelia been a terrible mistake?
Later that night, I heard footsteps moving quietly through the hallway. I realized Amelia was heading toward the attic again. She slipped inside, but this time, she didn’t lock the door behind her. Unable to ignore the growing knot in my stomach, I followed her upstairs and quietly stepped inside.
