Congratulations to Brother Gayhart Swenson, of Wisconsin Local 13, for his 75 years of dedication to the Bricklayers.

Gayhart began his apprenticeship in 1950 and became a masonry foreman during his third year. He also competed in the 1952 Bricklayers National Contest in Chicago. Throughout his career, Gayhart worked on a variety of prominent projects around the Madison area, including the Wisconsin State Capitol Building, Monona Grove School, and many others.

One of Gayhart’s proudest accomplishments was serving as the General Superintendent for the Sellery Residence Hall on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. His favorite project was a church on University Avenue in Madison, which featured numerous intricate arches.

Before the concrete pour, a lot of prep work goes into a project. The foreman explains how the subgrade must be prepared to the correct grade and compacted. Forms also need to be set up before any concrete arrives. It's organized chaos and teamwork to get the job done right. Have you ever worked on a construction site?
