Waves of Concrete 🌊

📌The Gulmohar Residential Complex in Ahmedabad, India by Wallmakers Construction Company integrates parametric design with the natural landscape. Its flowing vaulted forms interact with the site’s neem trees, while passive cooling strategies and locally sourced materials emphasize sustainability. The project creates a harmonious blend of architectural innovation and environmental sensitivity.

An Architectural Balance of Brick, Glass, and Light

🧱Built in 2021 in City Bell, Argentina, Belgrano Barbecue & Studio by studio VA Arquitectos, brings together communal and workspaces through a clear, material-driven architectural strategy. A series of simple volumes, crafted in exposed brick and transparent glass, are arranged beneath a lightweight wooden roof supported by slender steel columns. This open, pavilion-like composition allows for a seamless dialogue between interior spaces and the surrounding landscape.

A defining feature of the project is the perforated brick screen wall, which balances privacy, light filtration, and visual continuity. The floating roof and precise detailing emphasize horizontality and structural lightness, reinforcing the space’s multifunctionality as a gathering area, studio, and social venue. The project reflects a thoughtful response to climate, material tradition, and flexible use, grounded in architectural clarity and restraint.

🌇The Bay Window Tower House by Takaaki FUJI, completed in 2020 in Shibuya, Tokyo, occupies a compact 84 m² site with a distinctive octagonal footprint. Its carbonized cork façade, paired with glass and teak interiors, wraps the volume in thermal insulation and tactile materiality. The sliced-off corners form small garden pockets that not only embrace natural light and airflow but also respect neighboring residences.

Each floor is encircled by continuous bay windows that function as informal furniture, spaces for sitting, working, washing hands, or viewing the city. These bay windows also house operable panels selected through environmental simulation, three types (light, breeze, wall), to optimize daylight, ventilation, and heat control. The project exemplifies how precise environmental analysis and thoughtful material choice create adaptable, long-lasting urban dwellings.

✨The Perelman Performing Arts Center (PAC NYC), designed by REX is a versatile cultural venue at the World Trade Center. It serves as a platform for theater, music, dance, opera, and film, with a design that allows for sixty-two different stage-audience configurations, ranging from 90 to 950 seats. This adaptability is made possible by a combination of advanced technical systems, including movable seating towers, acoustic “guillotine” walls, and “spiralifts” which allow the space to transform to meet the needs of diverse performances.

🦚AYURU, the Forest Temple by Atelier Marko Brajovic, located in Paraty, Brazil, with an area of 2529 ft², was completed in 2024. Inspired by the fluid movement of birds, the temple is designed to integrate into its natural surroundings gently. It follows ancestral indigenous architectural principles, built entirely from local materials, including bamboo from Mambucaba and eucalyptus from Cunha. The structure features 16 bamboo pillars, each 11 meters high, and a roof of high-temperature glazed ceramic tiles that shift in color, influenced by natural light.

⭕Dismemberment, Site 1 by Anish Kapoor, located at Gibbs Farm in New Zealand, is a monumental site-specific sculpture that spans 85 meters in length and 25 meters in height. Composed of deep red PVC membrane stretched between two monumental elliptical steel rings, the installation slices through the rolling landscape like a physical incision, simultaneously sculptural and architectural in its presence.

Commissioned for Gibbs Farm’s open-air collection, the piece is both a spatial instrument and a perceptual experiment, connecting sky and earth through form, tension, and void. As visitors walk around and through the work, they encounter constantly shifting perspectives, moments of enclosure, framing, and disorientation, underscoring Kapoor’s exploration of the body, space, and material transformation at landscape scale.

⛓️The DZ Bank Building by Frank Gehry, completed in 2001, is located on Pariser Platz in Berlin, near the Brandenburg Gate. Designed as a mixed-use project, it includes the Berlin headquarters of DZ Bank along with 39 residential apartments, covering a total area of 20,000 square meters. Both the Pariser Platz and Behrenstrasse façades are clad in buff-colored limestone to reflect the historic character of the surrounding area. Each façade is scaled independently to respond to its immediate urban context, with the commercial side featuring simple, recessed window openings that align with the formal setting of Pariser Platz. A glass canopy marks the entrance, leading into a large atrium defined by a curving glass ceiling and floor.

🏗️Shanghai Opera House by Snøhetta Nears Completion

Currently in its final stages of construction, the Shanghai Opera House, designed by Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta, emerges as a future landmark along the Huangpu River. Its defining elements, including a monumental spiral staircase and lacquered roof form, are already visible, hinting at their role as new urban icons. Conceived as a publicly accessible cultural space, the opera house features 24-hour open terraces that seamlessly connect the waterfront landscape to the building’s artistic and architectural experience.

The rooftop staircase acts as an extension of the ground plane, inviting visitors to ascend and engage with panoramic views of Shanghai. Inside, three performance halls support a wide range of programming, reinforcing the role of architecture as a catalyst for social and sensory integration. The project brings together art, public life, and nature, positioning the opera house as both a cultural destination and an inclusive public realm.

🌇Would you visit the rooftop to experience the city from above?

🏚️What happens when handbags go architectural? The 0914 Flagship Store by TRU Architects + Eho turns Seoul’s Dosan Park into a couture village, stitching together café culture, art, and leathercraft under one stylish roof.

Designed as a “co-working village” for rising designers and seasoned artisans, this space isn’t just a store, it’s a love letter to craftsmanship (with espresso on the side).
