🏛️ A $1.5 billion museum that two major cities turned down.
After years of proposals, legal battles, and delays, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art will finally open in Los Angeles on September 22, 2026. Designed by Ma Yansong and developed by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, the 300,000-square-foot cultural landmark has become one of the most ambitious privately funded museums ever built.
Located in Exposition Park, the museum will house narrative art ranging from works by Norman Rockwell and Frida Kahlo to comic-book legends, film archives, and original props, models, costumes, and concept art from Lucasfilm productions. The collection includes more than 40,000 works spread across dozens of galleries.
What makes the story even more remarkable? The project was originally planned for San Francisco, then Chicago. Both cities lost it. Los Angeles won.
