Gerry Goffin and Carole King wrote "Chains" for the Cookies in 1962, and the Beatles cut their own version on February 11, 1963, during the marathon single-day session that produced the entire "Please Please Me" album. George Harrison sang lead, one of the first times fans got to hear him front a released Beatles track rather than sitting in the background. That whole album was recorded in roughly ten hours, and Goffin and King's song was just one piece of a session that produced fourteen tracks before the studio closed that night.

The Beatles recorded "Carol" for the BBC on July 2, 1963, John Lennon on lead vocals, having learned Chuck Berry's guitar solos by ear years earlier during their Hamburg and Liverpool club days. They played it live constantly through 1962 and into their BBC sessions, yet never once cut a proper studio version for EMI. So one of the songs that shaped Lennon's whole approach to guitar only exists as a radio broadcast, not officially released until 1994's "Live at the BBC," over thirty years after it aired. A formative influence with no studio record of its own.

McCartney wrote this about the "Apple Scruffs," dedicated fans who camped outside his London home - one of them, Diane Ashley, later admitted she and friends found a ladder in his garden, climbed through a bathroom window he'd left cracked, and let the others in the front door, walking off with clothes and photographs. It's the fifth song in Abbey Road's climactic medley, kicked off by Lennon's off-mic laugh and shout of "Oh, look out!" right as it segues from "Polythene Pam." A slower demo version from the January 1969 "Get Back" sessions later surfaced on "Anthology 3."

McCartney wrote this in a Paris hotel while the group was performing an 18-night residency at the Olympia Theatre, originally shaping it as a country and western number before it became the driving rocker everyone knows. Recorded in Paris on January 29, 1964, during the final hour of a session booked to record a German-language version of "She Loves You," it was the first Beatles single to feature just one lead singer - a shift Lennon reportedly felt threatened by, since he responded by writing the bulk of the songs on the next album himself. It hit #1 on the Hot 100 jumping from #27 the week before, a record for the biggest leap to the top spot that stood until Billboard's SoundScan era began in 1991.

John Lennon found an 1843 circus poster at an antique shop while filming a promo for "Strawberry Fields Forever," and he lifted the lyrics for "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!" almost word for word from it. William Kite was a real performer, and the Hendersons were real wire-walkers too, all pulled straight off the original advertisement. To get that swirling carnival sound Lennon wanted, George Martin and Geoff Emerick physically cut up old calliope tape recordings, tossed the pieces in the air, and spliced them back together at random. The BBC still banned it anyway, over a horse reference Lennon insisted had nothing to do with drugs.

Ringo Starr quit the Beatles in the middle of recording "Back in the U.S.S.R." Fed up with the tension in the White Album sessions and Paul's criticism of his drumming, he walked out on August 22, 1968, and stayed gone for two weeks. McCartney, Lennon, and Harrison kept working without him, splicing together a drum track from all three of them, with Paul doing most of it. When Ringo came back on September 3, he found his drum kit buried in flowers with a "Welcome Back" sign. 🥁 The song about escaping to somewhere else was recorded by a band that was briefly falling apart.

John Lennon wrote "It's Only Love" under the working title "That's a Nice Hat," and by his own account, he never grew fond of it. In a 1980 Pl***oy interview, he said the lyrics were abysmal and that he always hated the song. Paul McCartney actually wrote a good chunk of it, close to 40 percent by his own estimate, and was kinder about it, calling it a filler track they didn't fight over. It came out August 6, 1965 on Help!, and honestly, the melody has aged a lot better than Lennon ever gave it credit for. 🎸

Getting the backwards guitar solo on this song right took George Harrison almost six hours in a single overdub session. Instead of just playing the part and flipping the tape, the easy method, he wrote out the melody, transcribed it in reverse, then had to physically play that reversed notation forward so it would sound eerily correct once flipped back. The whole idea came from a tape operator accidentally threading a reel in backwards weeks earlier, a mistake the Beatles loved so much they asked George Martin if they could recreate it on purpose.

Lennon opened the song with a real newspaper story - the coroner's report into the death of Tara Browne, a Guinness heir and friend of the band, who'd crashed his car at high speed after running a red light in London. Lennon worked the Daily Mail directly into his songwriting session at the piano, and just a page later noticed another story about 4,000 potholes needing repair in Blackburn - both details landed straight in the lyrics. McCartney contributed the "woke up, fell out of bed" middle section along with the line "I'd love to turn you on," which he'd been carrying around unused. For the orchestral buildup, George Martin hired 40 classically trained musicians and simply told them to climb from the lowest note on their instrument to the highest - paid 18 pounds for the arrangement. The BBC banned it outright over the drug-reference scare.

This is simply "She Loves You" translated into German - EMI's German subsidiary insisted the group re-record it for that market, and this was the only time in the band's whole career they ever did a full foreign-language re-recording. Because the original English master tape had been destroyed after mixing, the Beatles had no choice but to rebuild the entire track from scratch in Paris, taking 13 takes to nail it. Lyricist Camillo Felgen took real liberties with the translation, though he kept the "yeah, yeah, yeah" hook intact since it needed no translating at all.
