Some losses definitely sting longer than others...and the loss of Kate is one of those painful lingering achey ones.
She was only 21. While I had a few years to come to terms with letting her go on the early side, with life there was still a shadowy hope of some good days, better flesh, easier breathing, and feet that might not hurt as badly so that I could steal a short ride here and there.
Like our Rose dog, Kate was a *huge* part of our lives. She was a perfect reflection of Wes's unique personality with her own blend of worried anxiety that resonated into my heart.
Her loving nature and adventurous personality will never be duplicated.
I'll never forget following behind Wes riding her at Shawnee- loose rein, forward and eager head and neck. She'd go anywhere. Anywhere.
The catch?
It had to be anywhere she wanted.
It was almost like she was one of Wes's hunting dogs exploring the area.
At a spook she'd spin out sideways, but gather up and keep going as if nothing ever happened. She loved to *go.*
It's just been a week, but I watch the reel I made for her almost every day- and almost every day I'm brought to tears missing her.
I miss her.
I miss our adventures.
I miss how much she loved my precious child.
I miss her potential.
I miss they way I could ride her and make me look like I actually knew how to ride.
On my wall she shares a space next to a photo of Sally and Allie in their pasture along side Rose.
Rose was only 9 when she left us- at least 3 years earlier than a fair timeline for a heeler. I feel the same tug when I see her silhouette in that picture-
And I know some day when Allie leaves, my heart will be shredded as well- so I hope and pray we have another 10 years with her...
Because somehow, when we reach the rightful end of a beautiful long life rather than a shortened cut off, the "celebration" of their life is louder than the raw good bye.
Often we ask ourselves why we even have these animals in our lives if they cause us so much pain when they leave-
But the joy and wholeness they bring us is out of this world indescribable.
And I wouldn't dare to have it any other way.
