Every Red Dirt fan knows the opening notes. Every Oklahoma bar has played it at least a thousand times. Every artist in the scene has covered it at one point or another. This week we're telling the story behind one of the most beloved songs to ever come out of the red dirt of Oklahoma. 🎸

Long before Stoney was headlining Cain's Ballroom and touring the country, he was cutting his teeth in Stillwater — the same town, the same scene, the same red dirt that raised Cross Canadian Ragweed, Jason Boland, and half the founding fathers of the genre. "Oklahoma Breakdown" wasn't originally written by Stoney (it came from Mike Hosty), but the moment Stoney picked it up, he made it his own — and turned it into a Red Dirt anthem. It's the kind of song where every Oklahoma bar in the state goes quiet for the first few bars, then loses its mind. 🔥

Oklahoma gave us the origin. Texas gave us the sound. Tennessee gave us the songwriter's songwriter. This week — we're heading WEST.
All the way to California. 🌵

🎸 FEATURED ARTIST: Merle Haggard
Long before Red Dirt was a genre, before Texas Country had a name, before the Nashville machine was even something to push back against — Merle Haggard was in Bakersfield, building a sound that would change country music forever. The Bakersfield Sound rejected polished Nashville production for real steel guitars, real fiddle, real working-man storytelling. Every single thing we love about Red Dirt and Texas Country traces back to what Merle and Buck Owens built out there in the California dust. He's the west coast's answer to the whole "we don't do Nashville" attitude — and that attitude is exactly what raised the artists we play every day. 🌾

Last year, Muskogee unveiled a bronze statue of the Hag right here in Oklahoma — a legend given his due on the same red dirt his songs became famous for. It doesn't get more full-circle than that. ❤️
