Both Afeni and Kevin felt dehumanized.
Both believe the other side doesn’t see their pain. Both walked in expecting to be judged and reduced to a stereotype.

Listening without judgement.

That is the key to The Enemies Project. That is how we can get a black activist and a former cop to talk to each other respectfully.

It’s hard. Especially when you think the other side is dangerous. When you believe they don’t care about people like you. When every instinct tells you to shut down, argue, or walk away.

But the truth is this: the path we’re on now (shouting, silencing, dehumanizing) is taking us somewhere dark. More fear. More hatred.

There is no workable future down that road.
Listening is not weakness. It is not surrender.

It is the only known way human beings reduce threat enough to see each other clearly.Without it, we stay trapped in stories about enemies we have never actually met.

If you want to understand how that shift actually happens between two people who start out seeing each other as the problem, you’ll need to watch the full episode.

NEW EPISODE OUT NOW

This morning, we released Falling from Islam: a Leaver and Believer on Youtube.

In this episode, Imtiaz, an ex-Muslim man shares what it cost him to leave his faith: family, community, and a sense of belonging.

Across from him sits Maysa, a leader at her mosque in St. Louis, who believes that those who leave Islam are traitors to their people.

They entered the room as enemies. They left with a depth of understanding neither had found even within their own families.

Even if you are not Muslim, ex-Muslim, or religious at all, this conversation is about something universal: what it means to belong, what it costs to walk away, and whether love can survive ideological rupture.

Afeni, a black activist, asks Kevin, an ex-cop to listen. Rather than a political argument, The Enemies Project focuses simply on understanding a differing perspective. As Larry says, “we are not truth seeking” or trying to prove a point, the goal is simply to listen.

We believe this is the only way to bring “enemies” together.
