For centuries, books have been banned for various reasons: they may contain explicit content, challenge political, religious, or social norms, or cause discomfort and make people upset. No matter the reason, the practice has led to censoring stories in an attempt to control the public consumption of said books.

Banned books are often excluded from libraries and schools; banned books are still accessible to the public in some capacity, but their circulation and/or availability to the masses is restricted. Receiving a banned book label also potentially influences the public's perception, as the book may now seem “bad”.

Banned books often provide readers with new perspectives and ideas. These stories can help people learn and grow their knowledge or perception of the world around them.
