The Grand Opening celebration of the Chester Bridge took place on August 23, 1942. In the beginning, a toll was collected on the Illinois side of the river for all traffic traveling in either direction. Tolls ceased on January 1, 1989.

Sections of the bridge were destroyed by a storm in July 1944, but it was repaired and reopened on August 24, 1946.

In 1967, the Chester Bridge made its film debut in the hit movie "In the Heat of the Night". It also appeared in 1993's "The Fugitive".

The Don Welge Memorial Bridge, a replacement for the Chester Bridge, is currently under construction.
