We spend a lot of time exploring the terrain of the world through MOFF films, but sometimes it's the unique characters who work and live in the wilds that serve as the most compelling subjects-- and Friday, 7/28 on the Eastern Promenade we are proud to feature such a film:
TO BE FRANK explores authenticity and community in surfing via Frank Paine, a 73-year-old South Bay, California icon and humble local legend whose life orbits around a two-block stretch of beach. His unforgettable mustache and magnetic spirit are what most first notice, but Frank’s deeper layers expose a depth that might answer some questions that all of us continually ask ourselves. Surfing, which, for some, becomes lost in isolation, is made whole again with Frank — welcoming, inspiring, kind and committed, with an unwavering passion centered on and springing from Hermosa Beach’s beloved shores.

The content of our July flagship film festival is designed as a diverse experience of transportive moments that course from distant shores, far flung ridges, foreign valleys, deserts, and fields but also the seldom examined but ever-evolving woods and waters of our Maine home: debuting 7/29 during the NUTHATCH PROGRAM from the Maine-based filmmakers at @mainemountainmedia is INVASIVE, a 6-minute short film about the homefront battle to retain biodiversity in our local plant species while we weather the changing climate.
While much of the native flora we are familiar with will die off in the coming decades due to environmental changes, INVASIVE speculates upon the likely plants to replace them and posits that without intention and care, invasive plant species will root deeper through this transition period to take over the forests. Follow local hero, botanist Amanda Devine, and her experience fighting hard to help combat the slow creep of invasion and her struggle to educate the community to work together to protect the fragile unique ecosystem of Maine.
Visit our stories for a direct link to snag your tickets for the NUTHATCH PROGRAM and to guarantee your seat to view this essentially focused film on the Eastern Prom, July 29th.

Passionate filmmakers ARE changing the narratives within the outdoor communities to highlight the cultural inequities in history, accessibility and inclusivity for BIPOC hikers, adventurers, and outdoors folk. Our 2022 Best Film From Away: MARDI & THE WHITES, a current feature of our Katahdin Program available for holiday streaming, is an 11.45 minute short film by the dynamic artist Paula Champagne ( @makerchamp ) a Massachusetts native currently working in Portland, OR. that elegantly explores these themes by following:
Mardi, a hiker and outdoorswoman and her rich relationship with nature that has evolved and deepened throughout her life. In the last 20 years she’s dedicated much of her time to exploring the landscape in the White Mountains on Abenaki land. In that time Mardi summited all forty-eight 4,000 footers multiple times, often as the only Black person on the mountain. She has experienced great joy from communing with this landscape, but the overwhelmingly white hiking community that is so seeped in white supremacy and colonialism complicates her experiences. Recently, she has focused on creating more opportunities for Black folks to join her in appreciating this magnificent wilderness. Enjoying this land with her community has been a liberating balm that has strengthened her sense of identity as an outdoorswoman. MARDI & THE WHITES is a peek into Mardi’s relationship with the White Mountains, the great outdoors, and the community that surrounds them; Above all, it’s a celebration of Black liberation in the wild.
