For years, we've photographed the many plants and animals we find , then posted those observations to iNaturalist, to identify them and also to learn more about the farm's ecosystem. It's always a thrill when we identify a new native species, even if when it's a common one, such as this Trailing Lespedeza!

Since the weather was dry this past week, Chip decided it was a good time to repair the front gutter on the farmhouse so it would finally stop dumping floods of water right beside the basement window. A lot of our projects are weather dependent; luckily, there's no lack of options when it comes to what we need to work on!

We planted this tiny island of native plants in a sea of Johnson Grass and Fescue three years ago, but its persistence here in the front lot is a hopeful sign that we will succeed in turning the old pasture into a meadow full of native wildflowers and grasses.

Cleaning this area of the kitchen took even longer than we expected, but it looks much better and will be a good work area in the future. Onward!

A summer storm cancelled our plans today, so let's see what we can accomplish inside the farmhouse instead!

The Cranefly orchid (Tipularia discolor) is easy to overlook, but if you examine its tiny flowers closely, you'll see they are uniquely designed to attract nocturnal moths as pollinators. This is the second spot we’ve found these native orchids growing .

We still have a couple more months before we harvest our corn . As is typical with this variety, many stalks have two or even three cobs. If things go well, this should be a good crop.

We finally had some dry weather, so we decided it was past time we checked on this year's crop of corn. Our cousin Matt planted around 7-8 acres for us this year and, with all the rain we've been having, it has shot up quickly. If the weather stays dry, we should be harvesting this corn in a couple of months.

As you arrive , you're greeted by the large, open expanse our family calls the "front lot." It’s our dream to restore this meadow and fill it with native grasses and wildflowers. That's not easy to do that without chemicals, but seeing these Greyheaded Coneflowers thriving here is one more step toward our dreams.

Unexpected twists are just part of the journey , especially when the project at hand is renovating an old farmhouse. But, when life throws you a curveball, you pivot, adapt and find a new way forward. In this case, that means cutting a hatch later, rather than removing all these cedar boards intact.
