More than a century ago, Covington businessman John Coppin put money on a horse he had no business backing. The horse, a longshot named Knowledge, won. Coppin took his winnings and built Kentucky’s first modern skyscraper, a department store that anchored downtown Covington for generations. When Hotel Covington opened inside that same building in 2016, the story didn’t disappear into a lobby plaque. It became the framework for everything the hotel would become, right down to the names above the door.

That framework is worth understanding as Hotel Covington marks its tenth anniversary this fall, because the milestone isn’t really about ten years of occupancy. It’s about what happens when a hotel decides its job is bigger than providing guest accomodations.
