Saturday, while filming a wedding, I kept seeing videos from the Hurricanes celebration.
Thousands of people cheering.
A Stanley Cup.
A city celebrating.
And there was Rod Brind’Amour holding the trophy.
Most people were seeing a championship.
I was remembering a wedding.
Sixteen years ago, I filmed Rod and Amy’s wedding.
It was my first major athlete wedding, and if I’m being honest, I barely slept the night before.
I was so nervous.
Then I walked into the bridal suite and met Amy.
Instantly, every nervous feeling disappeared.
She was joyful, funny, kind, and the kind of person who lights up every room she enters.
I remember thinking, “This is going to be a good day.”
One of the things I remember most about that wedding happened before the ceremony.
Because of the church’s restrictions, Amy and Rod recorded private messages to each other before the wedding.
What stayed with me wasn’t any particular sentence.
It was realizing they both referenced the same inside joke without knowing what the other had said.
Separate rooms.
No script.
No preparation.
Just two people who knew each other so well that their messages fit together perfectly.
And later, when Rod saw Amy for the first time…
His reaction was one of the most genuine moments I’ve ever captured.
Saturday, watching him hold the Stanley Cup, I wasn’t thinking about hockey.
I was thinking about that look.
That moment.
That wedding.
Congratulations, Rod and Amy.
I’ve been cheering you on ever since.
