We absolutely hate that so many people have horrible renovation stories. When you share your stories with us for us to tell others, it helps them to not make the same mistakes.

Please share your stories because learning the hard way is overrated.

Before you start your renovation, slow down and do this FIRST

Too many homeowners rush to hire the first contractor who seems confident… and end up learning expensive lessons later.

Before signing a contract or paying a deposit:
✔️ Verify their license
✔️ Check insurance coverage
✔️ Read reviews carefully
✔️ Ask for references
✔️ Get detailed bids in writing
✔️ Understand exactly what is included
✔️ Research permits and inspections

The people you hire can make or break your renovation experience.

A beautiful Instagram page does not equal quality work. A cheap quote is not always a good deal. And vague contracts can cost homeowners thousands.

Do your research before demo day, not after something goes wrong.

Follow us for more homeowner tips to help you renovate smarter, ask better questions, and avoid costly mistakes.

When business owners do the same business under multiple business names it can be a red flag. You can look up their businesses by searching their name and seeing what businesses they have filed. Seeing similar names and in the same industry should give you pause.

If you are thinking about hiring a contractor or doing a renovation, watch full episodes of our podcast to learn from other's mistakes... because learning the hard way is overrated.

If you have a horror story you would like to share, submit is at chicksinconstruction.com

Do not over pay your contractor. Are there circumstances where more than 20% may be needed, yes. However, those are few and far between. They would be small jobs where the cost of materials is most of the budget, or when custom items need to be ordered. Giving the contract more than 20% is not suggested.

We would like to thank The Bath Remodeling Center, LLC. for her knowledge and input on this topic! Go watch her episodes for even more info on remodeling your kitchen or bath!

Check the license number! Do NOT just take a contractor's word for it. Go to the general contractor license search website in your state and look up the name of the company and the name of the contractor you are thinking of working with.

Do this BEFORE you sign anything! Save yourself the headache and $$ .
