Join us Friday at 9am for an hour long special "I am the Migration" by Curtis Stewart in celebration of Juneteenth. Additionally, Marilyn Pekol, one of our Morning Classics host, put together a Juneteenth themed Morning Classics show from 10am-12pm.

"The American rail system is a metaphor for how culture has changed over the centuries. Movement is freeing, because you escape certain oppressions, but it also leaves holes in your personal memory that you have a hard time overcoming. For violinist and composer Curtis Stewart, creation is a way of overcoming.

To celebrate America's 250th anniversary, Stewart looked to his own family's American story and used it as inspiration for his new set of 24 American Caprices.

Stewart is the host for I Am The Migration, where he interviews his father about how the movement of their family has shaped a sense of identity and reinvention."

Last week, Jessie, WXPR’s CEO & GM, attended the NPR Fly-In in Washington, D.C., representing the interests of small, rural public radio stations alongside Sarah Bignall, CEO & GM of KAXE in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.

Rural public radio is a lifeline for the communities it serves, providing trusted news, emergency information, local culture, and connection. Thank you both for advocating for rural public media and ensuring that small station voices are part of the national conversation.

Tune in tomorrow, June 7th, at 9am to listen to Embodied: Building a Q***r Life in the Country.

Rae Garringer grew up on a sheep farm in rural West Virginia, and once they left for college and came out as q***r, they weren't sure they could ever move back. They believed the story they’d been told: to thrive as an out, LGBTQ+ person, you have to live in a city. But when Rae did move back to rural West Virginia in 2011, they realized that story was a lie.

Rae talks to host Anita Rao about making q***r life work in the country – from navigating dating challenges to getting along with neighbors you disagree with. They also talk about stories from Rae’s oral history project, podcast and book “Country Q***rs,” which documents q***r, rural life in 21 states around the country.

Rae is a writer, oral historian and audio producer. They’re the founder and director of the Country Q***rs project and the author of “Country Q***rs: A Love Letter.”

Pioneer Park Historical Complex Director Kerry Bloedorn shares the history of an early 1900s commercial model ice box on display at the logging museum. It was originally purchased by a lumber company in the Lake Tomahawk area.
The historical complex is now open for the season.
