early wake up is always worth it ✨💕🌅🏔️

not often will we wake up this early to climb a mountain, but when we do, it always is my favorite way to start the day!!! We are both wearing our Marmot Revlo Hybrid Jackets this morning.

These are such a great outer layer for hiking & active movement, because it has insulation in areas that will get cold, like your core, but stretch and ventilation where you will be warm, like under your arms and on your sides!

It’s meant to move in cold temps while allowing your body to breathe, & will be such a great layer as we move into winter!! what a perfect morning!!

gear we love that still has plenty of life left 🥾🏔️🏕️

One of the biggest reasons we wanted to start The Gear Project , is because outdoor gear is meant to last, and most of it isn’t being used to its full potential with one person. Hobbies change, priorities change, you may upgrade gear and no longer need it, or you may realize something doesn’t fit like you thought it would.

When we invest into outdoor gear, it’s expensive, and it has always been hard for us to know what to do with the gear when we no longer are using it, but feel like it’s still really valuable, and we tend to just let it sit for too long.

The Gear Project allows you to sell gear you aren’t using anymore and make some of that money back to spend on your next adventure, or to upgrade your gear.

When this idea first came to us, we had a few upgrades we were planning to make, and decided to hold onto our gear in case we ever actually got to see this platform come to fruition, and I actually can’t believe we are finally here!!

This is just a tiny bit of the amazing gear that is listed on the site so far! I am so so excited to see so many amazing deals and BARELY used or never used gear listed on the site right now. Scrolling through the platform right now really feels like walking right into a mountain town thrift store, which was my exact goal!! So many amazing gems on there already!! We really hope we can help these sellers make some of their money back, and help them find a buyer who can really use this gear.

post-summer closet clean-out ✨ selling all items on The Gear Project

I do closet cleanouts at LEAST 4 times a year, typically after every season, because more clutter & more things just makes decision fatigue higher!! I love only having items in my closet that get used often and that make me feel good, and I’m SO excited to finally have a place to sell my outdoorsy clothing & gear!!

My typical closet clean-out rules:

• if I haven’t worn it in the last 3 months and won’t in the next 3, it must go (this allows me to have items for all seasons)
• doesn’t fit perfectly? Has to go
• doesn’t make me feel good or I find myself adjusting it constantly? Has to go
• repeat items - must choose 1-2
• I HAVE to try all items on to make sure I love or don’t love them

This just keeps my brain clear and my closet only holding items I love!!

All of this clothing has so much life left, and I’m so excited to sell it on The Gear Project, which we are launching Thursday, September 10th at 9 am PT!

There are already over 700 listings on the site of clothes & gear in AMAZING shape!! You can currently browse & list your own clothing & gear while we wait to launch purchases!!

4 things about buying & selling on our marketplace 👇

One of my biggest goals with building The Gear Project, was to make it a place that feels easy to buy and sell from.

I want the outdoorsy community to feel like this is a place for you. Where other marketplaces have you sort through thousands of listings of random items from all categories of life, we wanted this to be a place where you can search for the exact items you are needing, your preferences on gear, and feel knowledgeable about the gear before you press purchase.

Specific filters you can use to search:
- Clothing size
- Inseam length
- Shoe size & width
- Down vs synthetic fill
- 1, 2, 3, 4 person capacity
- Backpack size & capacity
- Brand
- Price

For sellers, we wanted this to be a place where it felt easy to sell items in your closet. I know it can sometimes feel like a commitment to go through the selling process, but we wanted to build in as much as we could to make it feel seamless for you, so you can get cash back for items you have invested in to fund your next adventure or your next gear upgrade.

This is why we added things like:
- Vacation mode
- A guide on how to price your gear
- A shipping guide
- How to make boxes fit your item
- Prepaid shipping labels sent straight to your inbox when an item sells
- An audience of people who want your gear!! We hope we can help items sell your gear quickly and seamlessly!

What I want to reiterate again:

We built this platform FOR YOU, and want your input!! As you start using the site, listing & buying, feel free to reach out to us and let us know how you feel we can improve it! We already have a LONG list of additions for phase 2, 3 and 4, but I want to make sure I am making additions that you are stoked on!

Even two days ago, one of our users emailed us with a suggestion to add footwear width to the filters, and within the hour, we added the ability to filter for footwear by narrow, regular, and wide! The community is already helping to make this platform better, and I am stoked to work with all of you to make this happen!

Where your 30% commission goes 👇

When we decided to start this project, our biggest goal was to keep as much of a sellers money with the seller as possible. Typically other platforms like this take a scaled commission from 85-30% (for really high priced items) or consignment stores take 50-60% ish. We felt there was a gap in the market for a peer to peer marketplace that offered outdoor-focused gear and clothing.

As we started to build this, we changed the commission structure many times to try to make this even make sense at all, because, to be honest, it doesn’t financially make much sense 😅

I truly had no idea what it costs to run a safe, functioning, sustainable marketplace like this, and boy was I in for quite the surprise!! And I want to be as transparent as possible throughout this whole process so you know where your money is going when you choose to work with a small business like us!

We fully self funded this project thus far, and aren’t backed by venture capital & these are all based off of current projections for our first year. The more users that use our site, the more we can have funds to continue to improve it!!

But in a world where we are getting so used to shopping from billion dollar businesses, that can make shipping free and can charge next to nothing (nothing is free, someone is being charged somewhere), it can really skew how our brains look at small business costs.

& when AI makes us think everything should be available at our fingertips for free(nothing is free)

I wanted to give you a bit of an insider look into how we can make this function for everyone at such a beginner stage!

Competing with businesses like eBay and Facebook isn’t ever really going to be possible for us, but we hope we can continue to make this experience and community worth shopping and selling with for some!!

Also, getting told AI could recreate what we have spent an entire year on…. Is wild… I could say many things… but all I am going to say is… no it couldn’t :)

I am so so so excited to say that we are starting the stocking process for The Gear Project!

First of all, this is our first announcement that the website is live and functioning!! Feel free to start browsing, learning, creating and account, and learning about how The Gear Project functions!!

Second, if you have any gear you would like to list, we would be honored to have you sell it on our website!

We are accepting items in the categories: Men’s and Women’s Clothing, Kids clothing and gear, footwear, camp and hike, climb, snow, travel, water and bike!

I recommend going to our “What can I sell?” Page to read about size limitations on gear in phase 1, gear we are and aren’t accepting, and condition requirements.

On September 7th at 9 am, we will open up the website for transactions, so users can buy your gear!

If you want to start listing:

1. Create an account and verify your email (please make sure you do this, this is how we can send you information, order updates, etc.)

2. Click “Post a New Listing”

3. Select your categories, add listing descriptions, brand, size, condition, flaws/wear, and any other filters that apply.

4. Set your price

5. Add your shipping details and box size (learn more about this on our How to Ship page)

6. Add at least 4 photos

7. Verify with Stripe: This is how we ensure every seller is a real person, and is also how you get paid straight to your bank account when your item sells! This takes 5-7 minutes, and you only have to do this on your first listing.

8. Publish your listing!

How to sell, how to buy, commissions, safety & more!! 👇

I seriously already cannot thank you all enough for the excitement for The Gear Project!! We are so so so grateful that you are as excited about this as we are, and we can’t wait for it to finally be live for you to experience on your own!!

We have been getting a LOT of questions, so I wanted to run through quickly how this platform will work so you can be prepared and have a better understanding at launch!

As a recap:

- Anyone in the US can list and buy on the platform

SELLING:
- You can list as many or as few items as you would like!
- You will choose a category (categories are men’s and women’s clothing, kids, camp and hike, footwear, climb, snow, bike, water, and travel) add a title, description, flaws/wear, and some additional technical filters specifically for outdoor gear (down vs synthetic insulation, brand, backpack capacity, tent capacity, weight, etc.)
- We take a 30% commission on the item price
- You package the item and bringing it to the post office with a pre-paid shipping label

BUYING:
- You can shop by category, brand, shoe size, clothing size, price, and more, or can just browse from most recently listed
- Buyers pay shipping, as the shipping is calculated from the buyer’s address
- Your payment is held in an “escrow” style account from time of purchase until 72 hours post delivery to ensure the item is as described
- You get outside at a fraction of the cost of new!!

There are so many more details I am so excited to share with you, but I wanted to at least give you a basic rundown of how this whole process works!

I will have many more videos soon with more explanations and guides on how to sell, how to buy, and where the $$ for the commission goes.

What I want to stress most is: we built this platform FOR YOU. We want this to be easy to use, fun to shop on, and as affordable as possible, and this first launch is our first go at it on September 7th. We welcome any feedback and are already working on phases 2, 3 and 4 to make the marketplace even better for you!!

My heart is racing sharing this right now!! 🥾⛺️🏔️🌲🎒

For years we have wondered why something like this doesn’t already exist. And for years we have seen how the cost of getting high quality gear creates a huge barrier to entry to enjoying the outdoors.

And while we live in a mountain town with tons of used gear in thrift and consignment stores, most of the US doesn’t get the same access.

Meanwhile, garages across the country are filled with equipment that still has years of adventure left in it. Outdoor gear is built to last, but SO many packs, shoes, jackets, pants, and tents sit in garages, unused, because gear got upgraded, goals changed, or time got away, and there isn’t an easy way to sell them.

Being in this space for years, we have firsthand seen how the cost of quality gear is keeping you from getting outside.

And we just found ourselves asking:

Where does all of that unused gear go?

Wouldn’t it be amazing if everyone had access to used gear?

What if there was a place where everyone could sell their old gear when their goals change or they are ready to upgrade?

What if they could then use that money to fund their next adventure?

We believe that everyone should have access to quality gear, regardless of budget.

So, we built The Gear Project:

An online peer-to-peer marketplace where adventurers can buy and sell pre-loved gear.

A community where the outdoors become more accessible, more sustainable, and more inclusive.

I have truly never felt more aligned with anything in our lives, and I am so so excited to share what we have built for you. This has been a passion project for the last year, and I hope that we have created something that you feel is going to be a really valuable resource for getting outdoors.

I feel I could keep talking about this for so many paragraphs, but I will leave it here for now!!

Everything you need for your next adventure likely already exists, and we hope you find it on The Gear Project.
