Today marks the first day of the Atlantic hurricane season, and this piece of local history offers a fascinating look back at one of Northeast Florida's most significant storms.
We recently purchased an original copy of LIFE magazine from September 25, 1964, featuring the aftermath of Hurricane Dora in Northeast Florida.
Hurricane Dora made history as the first recorded hurricane to make landfall along Florida's Atlantic coast at hurricane strength. The storm brought devastating winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surge to the area, with tides reaching 12 feet at Anastasia Island.
For many longtime residents, Dora remains one of the most memorable storms to impact St. Augustine and the surrounding region.
