Annie Humphrey’s (Leech Lake Band Ojibwe) double nominated album, “The Light In My Bones” features the late John Trudell. Growing up on the Leech Lake Indian Reservation in Northern Minnesota, Annie Humphrey lived in a home filled with voices made of thunder and nothing could stop it. Her parents were brilliant people individually. Her father, a singer and musician and her mother an artist and poet. Each of her parents taught Annie the beautiful things they knew. They showed her that she carried their gifts in her hands too. This is how creating art and music came about for her. This is what saved her. This is how she lives now. Her first national recording, The Heron Smiled, won her national recognition as Female Artist of the Year and Best Folk Recording at the 2001 Native American Music Awards. Her second recording, Edge of America won a Native American Music Award for Best Music Video. The title track from this recording was later featured on Chris Eyre's film Edge of America. Annie's album, The Beast and The Garden earned her the highly coveted Artist of the Year award. Annie spent a year in the Marines, stationed in Okinawa, among other places, and played in bands during this period.
