“The governor announced that he had instructed his cabinet to start preparing recession plans, which is there are headwinds coming,” said Ben Winslow of FOX 13 News.

“And the governor defends that, saying that we always prepare for a worst-case scenario. At the same time […] we have a strong economy and we've seen the latest unemployment reports, which still show Utah is doing very, very well, but you are also seeing signs of economic headwinds, and they are nervous about what could potentially come.”

“This [bill] clearly had more support than perhaps the opponents thought that it did,” said Daniel Woodruff of of KSL 5 TV. “I know the headline was always, ‘Pride flags can't be displayed in classrooms.’ It also dealt with any political flags, so a MAGA flag would apply in this case as well.

“When I sat in the hearings, when I listened to the debate, there was a lot of concern about disenfranchising different communities and the government playing a heavy hand. But ultimately, the polling, I think, shows that there was more support for it than some may have thought.”

“One of the great things about politics, or maybe the frustrating things, is the pendulum swings,” said Holly Richardson, editor of Utah Policy. “So, right now it's still pretty much Trump's party and the Republican Party, and that's reflected in Utah as well, but that changes, right?

"I sometimes see people say, ‘Well, we had all these people show up at the AOC rally,’ and, ‘Does that mean Utah's gonna go blue or purple,’ right? No, it does not mean that. There is a rising discontent, I would say, within, or at least maybe a more vocal one, within the Democratic Party and unaffiliated voters, but that still doesn't translate into changes of seats, especially on the federal level.”

“Technology is delivering on solar panels that are low cost to this almost free energy source,” said Natalie Gochnour of the Gardener Institute. “Now, it's not 24/7. It's not at night, but battery storage is going up, up too. And so what we have to do as a state is be on the leading edge of this rapidly evolving sector.”

“I agree that we need to be in the AI game,” said Derek Miller. “So if we can leverage the opportunity to bring those AI data centers as a gateway into something more for our economy, then I think it's a great thing for us.”

“Traditionally, we would see 2 to 3% growth in our demand for electricity. With AI data centers, that bumps up […] to something very steep,” said Senator Scott Sandall. “We want to make sure that we don't allow those costs to come in and translate across the rest of the system. But also, […] we want those facilities here. They bring billions of dollars of potential impact to the state of Utah.”

“I think the fact that the Republicans do have a supermajority, they're not necessarily putting too much thought into the power of the governor's veto,” said Sean Higgins. “I think Cox has shown his reluctance to really pick really hard fights with the legislature on certain things that he maybe feels uneasy about. […] So, I think it's very tactical and very strategic in where he applies that veto power.”

How should Utah break ties in municipal elections?

“How do you decide an election [that is tied]? The electorate is pretty uncomfortable going through a whole process and then flipping a coin or doing something else, so there should probably be a better way to decide it,” said Doug Wilks.

“Have we grown so big that we need to change some of our processes and structures?” Asked Maura Carabello of the Exoro Group. “The nuance of that is I think it's very easy to say, ‘Let's pass fewer bills,’ […]I just hope when we have that conversation, it's not a simple one, it's a complex one that is about what serves us the best.”

“I think the really interesting thing on the Department of Education, [is that it] started in 1979. I am one year older than the Department of Education, right?” Said Marty Carpenter. “We have enough of a track record to see how its performance has been. […] Something about what we're doing isn't working and it makes sense to a lot of people to say, ‘Why are we sending money to DC to send it back to us if we're not getting the results? Let's try something different.’”

“[Gov. Cox] figures if he negotiates [bills] along the way, that he should let it go through,” said Heidi Hatch. “But he has a chance, if there's a bill, let's say, for example, the flag bill, and he doesn't like it, like the LGBTQ and sports bill a few years ago, if he feels strongly, he can veto it. It'll be overridden, but he can still have his voice heard.”
