We are so excited to announce that Laurie Lee Hall’s memoir “Dictates of Conscience: From Mormon High Priest to My New Life as a Woman” was named as an Evans Handcart Award Finalist from over 30 submissions received. 🏅👏

The jury said her book 📕 offers an articulate, forthright, and, at times, heartbreaking narrative of what it meant to transition from holding a patriarchal role in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to being a woman.”

Thank you Katie L Rich and The Exponent II for sharing thoughts about our friend Carol Lynn Pearson and her diaries. We are so grateful to be a part of bringing them into the world. 🌎

“This week, the Exponent II community continues to mourn the loss of Carol Lynn Pearson, the luminous Mormon author, poet, playwright, feminist, and activist who passed away last Wednesday, July 29.

Carol Lynn gave us an extraordinary body of work over the course of her life: poetry, books, plays, songs, memoir, and decades of advocacy for women and LGBTQ people. Her final publications offer us something even more intimate—her own diaries, which she kept nearly every day beginning as a teenager.

Signature Books is publishing those diaries in a four-volume series, The Diaries of Carol Lynn Pearson: Mormon Author, Feminist, and Activist. Volume 1, covering 1956–1990, and Volume 2, covering 1990–2002, are now available.

The first volume follows Carol Lynn from a young woman searching for her voice through her emergence as a bestselling poet and public figure. Along the way, she records her love for Mormonism alongside her growing feminist consciousness and her struggles with patriarchy, polygamy, the absence of the feminine divine, and the church’s treatment of LGBTQ people. It also takes readers through the extraordinary personal experiences that eventually became Goodbye, I Love You.

Volume 2 carries her story into the 1990s and early 2000s, through both joy and profound loss. She reflects on Mormon feminism and activism, the church’s treatment of scholars and dissenters, the success of Mother Wove the Morning, and her continuing determination to comfort people who were hurting and speak for change.

Carol Lynn once wrote in her diary, “I feel somehow that of all the writing I am doing, my diary is the most important.” She understood that these private records might someday matter beyond herself. She was right.

Volume 3 is expected later this fall, with a fourth volume to follow. We are profoundly grateful that even after her death, Carol Lynn has left us more of her words—her questions, her humor, her struggles, her courage, and her expansive vision of what our community might yet become.
