Returning to my conversations with the different AIs, this might have been the most interesting takeaway.

The AIs all agreed Utah has enough skill.

What they questioned was whether the Mammoth are built for playoff hockey.

They all pointed to the same things:

✔ More net-front presence
✔ More board battle wins
✔ More forechecking pressure
✔ More physicality in front of the net

Basically:

More players that opponents hate playing against.

I don't completely disagree.

The regular season rewards speed.

The playoffs reward survival.

Do the Mammoth have enough of that element right now?

The Utah Mammoth rumor mill is spinning again, but this time the name isn't Dylan Larkin.

It's Sebastian Cossa.

The former first-round pick was supposed to be a major piece of Steve Yzerman's long-term plan in Detroit. A 6-foot-7 goalie with franchise-goaltender potential, Cossa just finished a stellar season with Grand Rapids, posting a 26-8-4 record and a .915 save percentage.

The problem?

Detroit's situation may have changed.

The Red Wings traded for John Gibson. Cam Talbot continues to be productive despite what some fans want to believe. If Detroit is trying to win now, Cossa may find himself stuck waiting for an opportunity that isn't coming anytime soon.

That's where Utah becomes interesting.

Karel Vejmelka is the present. Michael Hrabal looks like a big part of the future. But the backup position remains a question mark.

Jaxson Stauber and Matt Villalta have both had their moments, but neither projects as a long-term answer. Cossa brings a different ceiling entirely.

The question isn't whether he'd improve the organization's goaltending depth.

The question is what Steve Yzerman would want in return.

If Detroit lands another goalie and decides Cossa is expendable, Bill Armstrong should at least make the phone call.

Good organizations buy talent when another team runs out of room for it.

Would you make a move for Sebastian Cossa if you were running the Utah Mammoth?

Gaming discourse online can be exhausting.

Every day it's another conversation about how Call of Duty is dead, Fortnite is ruining gaming, MMORPGs are dying, AAA studios have lost their way, or the industry is collapsing.

And yet...

Halo Campaign Evolved launches next month.

Fable finally arrives next February.

Wolverine is embracing a linear story-driven experience instead of chasing the open-world trend.

Clockwork Revolution looks fantastic.

Palworld is officially hitting 1.0.

Crazy Taxi is back.

Kingdom Hearts 4 is finally real.

A remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is on the way.

Pokémon Winds and Waves looks promising.

Join Us looks hilariously weird in the best possible way.

And that's only scratching the surface.

The last few years haven't been perfect. Plenty of major studios have stumbled. But it feels like the industry is starting to remember that great games—not battle passes, not microtransactions, not engagement metrics—are what get players excited.

Microsoft appears to have a clear vision again. Nintendo continues to do what Nintendo does. Developers are taking chances on new ideas while bringing back beloved franchises.

There has never been a better time to stop focusing on what you hate and start paying attention to what you're excited to play.

What game announcement has you the most excited right now?

One thing that stood out from this week's episode:

The Utah Royals are sitting at the top of the NWSL, and almost nobody saw it coming.

After being projected near the bottom of the league before the season, Utah has turned into one of the best stories in professional sports right now. Add in Mandy McGlynn representing both the Royals and the United States Women's National Team, and it's hard to ignore what this club is building.

Matt also dives into ESPN's latest rankings for BYU and Utah football, breaks down why LJ Martin could be in for a monster season, and shares his biggest takeaways from Summer Game Fest and the latest gaming announcements.

If you haven't checked out this week's episode yet, now's a great time to catch up.

What surprised you more: the Utah Royals being the top team in the NWSL or the amount of gaming news that dropped this week?

This is where all three AIs landed in the same spot.

If a true superstar becomes available, Utah should at least make the phone call.

And yes...

That includes Auston Matthews.

But the part I found interesting was what the AIs refused to do.

None of them wanted to trade:

❌ Logan Cooley
❌ Dylan Guenther
❌ Tij Iginla
❌ Dmitri Simashev

The consensus was clear:

Explore the superstar market.

Don't gut the future to do it.

That's a balancing act every contender has to figure out.

Would you move major futures for Matthews?

Or would you bet on Utah's young core becoming stars themselves?

All three AIs agreed on the Mammoth's biggest need.

Another top-pair defenseman.

Normally I'd agree.

But as is often the case with these exercises, they're working with outdated information.

The acquisition of Mackenzie Weegar changes everything.

Instead of looking for a partner for Sergachev, Utah now has:

🏒 Sergachev
🏒 Weegar
🏒 Marino
🏒 Schmidt

That's already one of the better defensive groups in the Western Conference.

The AIs treated this roster like the defense still needed a major addition.

I don't think that's true.

Which means the conversation changes.

If defense isn't the biggest need anymore...

What is?

More scoring?

More playoff toughness?

A superstar addition?

This is where I think the robots missed the mark.

Every so often I like to ask different AIs the same sports question and compare the answers.

This week's question:

"If you're Bill Armstrong, how do you take the Utah Mammoth from playoff team to Stanley Cup champion within the next 5-6 years?"

The interesting part?

All three AIs agreed on several major points.

The even more interesting part?

I think they got at least one big thing completely wrong.

Over the next week I'll break down where the robots were right, where they missed the mark, and what I think the Mammoth's path to a Stanley Cup actually looks like.

Tomorrow: The biggest thing all three AIs agreed on... and why I disagree.
