The Utah Mammoth rumor mill is spinning again, but this time the name isn't Dylan Larkin.
It's Sebastian Cossa.
The former first-round pick was supposed to be a major piece of Steve Yzerman's long-term plan in Detroit. A 6-foot-7 goalie with franchise-goaltender potential, Cossa just finished a stellar season with Grand Rapids, posting a 26-8-4 record and a .915 save percentage.
The problem?
Detroit's situation may have changed.
The Red Wings traded for John Gibson. Cam Talbot continues to be productive despite what some fans want to believe. If Detroit is trying to win now, Cossa may find himself stuck waiting for an opportunity that isn't coming anytime soon.
That's where Utah becomes interesting.
Karel Vejmelka is the present. Michael Hrabal looks like a big part of the future. But the backup position remains a question mark.
Jaxson Stauber and Matt Villalta have both had their moments, but neither projects as a long-term answer. Cossa brings a different ceiling entirely.
The question isn't whether he'd improve the organization's goaltending depth.
The question is what Steve Yzerman would want in return.
If Detroit lands another goalie and decides Cossa is expendable, Bill Armstrong should at least make the phone call.
Good organizations buy talent when another team runs out of room for it.
Would you make a move for Sebastian Cossa if you were running the Utah Mammoth?
