After mixed reviews on his last directorial feature, Bradley Cooper is back to prove his career is no joke. His new film, Is This Thing On?, centers around an aspiring comic who uses stand-up to process his midlife divorce. Despite focusing on comedy, the film is more understated and grounded than funny. SLUG Senior Staff Writer Patrick Gibbs writes, “Alex never comes off as a great comedian. He may not even be a particularly good one, but he keeps getting up there, and that in and of itself makes him interesting. Cooper nicely captures the quiet complexities of post-divorce life and midlife reinvention.” Click the link below to read his full review!

“I wouldn’t be a filmmaker without Sundance,” says Ira Sachs, who grew up coming to the historic festival when his father moved to Park City in the late ‘70s. “I have been educated for decades on the mountain. And I am grateful for that.”

As many filmmakers like Sachs past and present are taking in the historic film festival’s last dance, other Sundance alumni like Anna Boden and Jared Hess contemplate its impact on their own careers.

Saemore blends the sounds of indie and alternative with the Western influences she was raised on. She resented Western Music growing up, but as she got older, it became nostalgic, and she began to resonate with it. She pulls inspiration from artists like Noah Cyrus and Casey Musgraves. Her latest album, Lucky Woman, was inspired by women’s empowerment and finding yourself after a breakup. She calls it “melancholy, because it has a lot of hope but also despair.” Hear more about her creative journey by streaming SLUG Soundwaves through the link below!

Nashville indie pop duo LANY’s recent, highly romantic album, Soft, stands out from recent offerings while still not measuring up to their first two. Regardless, on Soft, SLUG Senior Staff Writer Palak Jayswal says that LANY “slowly claws their way back to the center of where they originally started, writing simple tracks that connect with listeners far and wide.” Read the full album review here: slugmag.com/music/national-music-reviews/review-lany-soft/

Rather than falling into a “‘pit’ of its own making” by “piling on too much” after its intense and highly accoladed first season, SLUG Senior Staff Writer Patrick Gibbs says The Pitt’s second season, which dropped on HBO Max today, “moves with the confidence of a show that knows that it’s already proven itself.” Read his full review online here: slugmag.com/arts/film/film-reviews/series-review-the-pitt-season-two/

You don’t need to go to Seattle to hear good grunge. SLUG Contributing Writer Connor Kraus writes that, "Dysregulation has made the dirt-covered and grime-splattered sound of DIY, garage band grunge right here in the mountains." Dysregulation translates that frustrating inability to regulate one’s emotions, which inspired their name, well into their new self-titled EP. Krauss says that they “sound like they are coming straight from their skulls with all the chaotic fuzz and brain zaps included.” Read his full review of the EP below:

In an attempt to change the potentially outdated narrative around the idea of opera, Park City Opera has teamed up with numerous local organizations, and boy, is the community singing praises. At the Park City Library, co-founder and Development Director Lisl Wangermann recalls a solid presence of children at the event: “That’s really, really exciting to see the next generation of performers and audience members discovering something new.”

SLUG Contributing Writer Devin Oldroyd dives into the positivity opera can bring to the community. Prepare to be serenaded and check out Park City Opera! Read more at: https://www.slugmag.com/arts/art/performance-theatre/opera-for-everyone-park-city-opera-and-the-value-of-community/

The mythical, all-woman British indie rock outfit The Last Dinner Party are known for their gothic, Victorian imagery and combining of “soft empathy” with “leathery intensity,” which they continue to do thematically on their sophomore record, From The Pyre. House of Temptaxxions defies Utah’s prudish reputation by bringing erotic nightlife to our red state. SLUG Contributing Writer Grace Simpson writes, “Temptaxxions has become not only a home for countercultural and LGBTQ+ artists in the SLC area, but also an educational resource for Utahns who misunderstand what cabaret is.” This education has shifted how people perceive nightlife in Utah, becoming much more positive. Read all about how House of Temptaxxions both entertains and educates the community at the link below! https://www.slugmag.com/community/beyond-sexuality-how-house-of-temptaxxions-educates-and-entertains/

From the first 45 seconds of the album, SLUG Contributing Writer Ezra Smith says Super by Hangxiety is “the sort of sound reserved for the punishment of upstairs neighbors.” But in a good way! Smith says this album is “the sonic equivalent of blacksmithing: dirty and rhythmic, but it will burn your skin off if you don’t respect it.” If you’re looking to get into the experimental side of SLC punk, look no further.
