After years of discussions, Salt Lake City has finally unveiled its plans to overhaul Smith’s Ballpark and redevelop the site to include housing, green space and other areas for the neighborhood’s benefit.

The Salt Lake City Community Reinvestment Agency (CRA) released its final draft plans for the old ballpark Tuesday, outlining the plan to turn the recently-vacated stadium into a neighborhood hub with year-round activation.

“I can’t think of another development I’ve been more excited about in my 11 or 12 years in City Hall,” Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall told BSL on Tuesday.

The investor owners behind that project and the nearby Astra Tower are testing the appetite for high-end luxury units in a type of housing that has never existed in the capital city before.

Astra’s owner said on Tuesday that rent in that building’s penthouses would likely be higher than Worthington’s. Read more about it at the link in our bio.

The Delta Center overhaul is underway — and the arena we all know will look much different next year.

After both teams playing within the arena missed the playoffs this year, Smith Entertainment Group (SEG) has already started work with completely redesigning the interior of the downtown Salt Lake City arena with the goal of not only redesigning it to be a hockey arena, but creating a new riser system that would give the arena clean sightlines so fans can see both goals.

In addition to the interior remodels, the outside will get a facelift as well.

Two influential members of the Salt Lake City Planning Commission told city staffers a proposal to merge two multifamily zones wasn’t ready for primetime this week, fearing the concept as written would lead to collateral damage and new buildings that are out of scale with existing neighborhoods.

Two key commissioners who are generally supportive of fixing broken zoning codes fear collateral damage as a result of a proposal to update two zones.
