“Anthony Gordon. Honestly, I didn’t expect us to become this close so quickly, but we just clicked from the beginning. He’s always joking around, he has a lot of energy and he’s the kind of person who makes the dressing room feel lighter.

We also understand each other on the pitch. I know the runs he’s going to make, and he already understands the spaces I like to play in. Off the pitch, we talk a lot and sometimes we just laugh about everything.

“Honestly, when Hansi called me over at 3-0, I thought he wanted to say something positive about how the game was going. I was thinking, ‘Okay, maybe he’s happy with my performance, maybe he just wants to give me some encouragement.’

But he came to me and said, ‘Rodri, press their midfielders better. Don’t let them breathe. They’re starting to have too much of the ball.’

I remember looking at him like, ‘Coach… we’re winning 3-0!’ In my mind I was thinking, ‘Relax, we’re comfortable.’ But that’s Flick. He doesn’t care if it’s 3-0, 4-0 or 5-0. If he sees something that isn’t right, he tells you immediately.

And he was right. Feyenoord were beginning to get more possession and find spaces in midfield. He wanted me to kill that momentum before it became a problem.

That conversation showed me something about him. For Flick, being 3-0 up is not an excuse to stop playing football. He wants us to control the game until the final whistle.”

🗣️ Lewandowski: “Before I left Barcelona, I spoke with Raphinha. I told him, ‘Maybe they don’t need to spend crazy money replacing me. Maybe you should just take my position.’

He laughed because he’s spent most of his career as a winger. But I was serious.

We played together for years. I knew his finishing, his aggression, how much he wants to score. I told him, ‘If you want to play there, watch the movement. You’ve watched me every week. Steal whatever you need.’ [laughs]

And now I watch him and recognise some of those movements. He hasn’t tried to become Lewandowski. He’s just added them to everything he already had as Raphinha.

People can say, ‘But he’s not a natural No.9.’ Okay. He has eight goals in five games. He’s moving like a striker, finishing like one, and still gives you everything Raphinha gave you as a winger.

Barcelona will need another striker, of course. But I told him before I left, ‘Don’t automatically think you’re the understudy.’

Maybe the next striker they sign should be yours.”
