View while flying into Salt Lake. The Kennecott Copper Mine, also known as the Bingham Canyon Mine, is the world’s largest human-made excavation and an iconic open-pit copper mine in Utah’s Oquirrh Mountains, southwest of Salt Lake City.
Discovered in the late 1800s, large-scale open-pit mining began in 1906 using innovative methods for low-grade ore. It has produced more copper than any mine in history—over 19 million tons—along with gold, silver, and molybdenum.
Owned by Rio Tinto via Kennecott Utah Copper, the massive pit (about 2.5 miles wide and 0.75 miles deep) remains a vital U.S. copper producer after 120+ years. Anyone been to their visitor center? Anyone know someone that word here? 👇
