A fan of soul music, Herring found inspiration for his pop-jazz project Something Else! in the Motown R***e concerts he watched as a kid. These were packaged concerts that featured Motown’s biggest stars, like The Temptations and Diana Ross.

"Wouldn't it be nice to have something like that? You know, just thinking about myself as a audience participant, how much I would like to go to that concert," Herring said.

Today is the 100th birthday of one of the greatest jazz artists of all time: Miles Davis. Throughout his storied career, Davis redefined jazz as he pioneered several stylistic evolutions and kept the improvisational music relevant.

Countless musicians cite Davis as an influence, and trumpeters feel it in particular. Three notable jazz trumpeters, Thomas Marriott, Dmitry Matheny, and Riley Mulherkar have felt Davis' lasting impact on their approach to the instrument.

"When I was five years old, my father would play the classic album, 'Kind of Blue', and the music filled our little apartment. I was mesmerized. I said, 'Daddy, what's that sound?' And he replied, 'That's jazz. That's Miles Davis.'"

Vocalist Jazzmeia Horn sees a double meaning in the title of her debut, 'Social Call.' It's a jazz standard included on the album, and also a call to make a difference in society. For Horn, singing is about connection; helping listeners connect to themselves and her relationship with the audience.

"Everything that I do is not for me, it's actually for somebody else, in hopes that they might see it and and feel a certain way and maybe change or enhance whoever they are as a person, and that's what this music is about," she said.
