Ross: Baby formula shortage puts new mothers in difficult spot

The headlines are pretty straightforward: “Homemade baby formula can be dangerous.” “Never make homemade baby formula.” We get it. But then what’s a mom supposed to do?

I’m having trouble accepting that the US is dealing with a baby formula shortage – especially when the main advice is do NOT try to make your own.

Seattle's No Judgement Fitness is a safe space for the LGBTQ community to workout

“There’s a Facebook group called Seattle Queer Exchange, and a couple times a month, trans and gender non-conforming people would be posting, begging for somewhere safe they could work out,” said Walker. “People don’t like getting stared at, people don’t like getting judged for being in the weights area. They want to feel safe in the shower. Why is this stuff so hard?”

No Judgement Fitness is mirror free and focuses on body positivity, not weight loss.

History of abortion laws and politics in the Evergreen State

As the fallout from the Supreme Court leak continues to fuel debate, demonstrations, and political maneuvering regarding the future of abortion rights, it’s worth noting that Washington voters have twice approved pro-choice ballot measures in the past – including a few years before Roe v. Wade, and again in 1991.

Overturning Roe v. Wade ‘wrong result,’ upsets Supreme Court precedence, former WA AG says

“Without Roe, you don’t have a constitutional right to an abortion. That’s a very dramatic result. It’s the wrong result in my view because Roe has been on the books, as modified by Casey v. Planned Parenthood, for almost 50 years now.”

The Supreme Court is poised to make a ruling on Roe v. Wade, potentially upturning the right to abortion and leaving the issue up to the states.

Will Anacortes-Sidney ferry return with belated centennial celebration?

The Anacortes to Sidney ferry – which connects Washington and Vancouver Island – has been shut down for more than two years because of the pandemic. And that’s a shame, because the iconic route from Skagit County through the San Juan Islands to the Saanich Peninsula just quietly – or maybe that should be “silently” – marked its 100th anniversary.

A story on the Democrats’ controversial export fuel tax. From MyNorthwest: “Is Washington on the brink of a trade war with Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska? All three states have expressed deep concern over a plan from Washington Democrats to impose a six cent per gallon tax on fuel refined along Puget Sound but shipped out of state.”
House Republicans have offered real solutions for public safety. From MyNorthwest: A newer bill, HB 1788, from long-time cop and Republican state Rep. Eric Robertson would have lowered the threshold to engage in pursuits to reasonable suspicion, and expand when officers are able to use physical force, among other “fixes.” That bill died when it failed to get a floor vote in the House before a key deadline, much to the frustration of Republican leaders.
The Democrats’ transportation plan will come at a great cost to Washingtonians. From MyNorthwest: Others within Oregon’s state leadership expressed the possibility of taking action against Washington should the fuel tax be implemented. “I suppose if enacted, Oregon will look at ways to retaliate,” Oregon state Sen. Lee Beyer — who chairs the state’s transportation committee — told Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB).

Check out this article from MyNorthwest on what is happening with the Loomis Act! Here are some key takeaways: · Tribal leaders set the stage on the importance of salmon, for Tribes and for all people in Washington. They reminded people that salmon are essential to meet Tribal Treaty Rights, and a change in direction is needed. · Agricultural voices clearly stated the importance of local food resources and that they are concerned about losing agricultural lands from production. · Fishing voices were also clear on the importance of local food resources and they shared empathy with agricultural producers and interest in working together toward solutions.
