Jibba the Gent

Jibba the Gent Rapper from So.802, 1/2 of Causin' Effect, 6ix5ive6ix I don't know where I would be without music, it's the one thing that has kept me level headed mentally.

Jibba the Gent is not your regular, run of the mill rapper. Yes, he may have been born and raised far from any of the notable hip hop hot spots like New York, Los Angeles, and Atlanta in of all places, Vermont - but does locale matter when you’re able to flow with such precision it has surgeons jealous? Exactly. So stacked with enough talent to put Vermont on the map as the next leading place of t

he genre, Jibba the Gent continues to thrive with every move he makes. Music has been a part of Jibba the Gent’s life for as long as he’s been breathing. Growing up he idolized the funk of Andre 3000 and always appreciated the Grammy-winner’s point of view both musically and lyrically. He started messing around with music some time ago, but was thrown a curveball when he was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in 2011. While some have mild forms, Jibba the Gent was not so lucky. As the severe pain took over his body, he was left unable to do much of anything, including music. Once the doctors got him back on track and on his way to recovery, he promised himself that his dreams would be his top priority and he got to work. He dropped his debut album, ‘The Broccoli Tree,’ in May 2017 and since then he’s a cascade of singles he’s released since then including 2020’s “Trippin’ and “Self Destruct.” Jibba the Gent says of the latter, “This record is about a person that has given up on everything he once believed in, doing the exact opposite of everything he's ever done, and lashing out at the society around him.” He wrote it after a falling out with a close friend but made so many along the way to get this recorded. Working alongside Mickey Factz, Jibba the Gent boasts with pride over “Self Destruct,” a single he’s called a “ballsy” move. Which it is, but one cannot play it safe when trying to reach the top, right? Jibba the Gent went for it with this controversial, abrasive new track that goes the extra mile in terms of production and sound thanks to the maestro in the booth, SkySplitterInk. “Self Destruct” even features cuts from DJ Kanganade. If the Avengers were hip hop’s finest, Jibba the Gent would be their leader because he truly pulled out the stops to assemble. One may have assumed being in Vermont would have limited his reach but Jibba the Gent has been able to reach many by playing near and far from the heart of Brooklyn to the west coast from Los Angeles to Oakland, and everywhere in between headlining and opening for everyone from CHingy to Juvenile. Jibba has even produced shows in his native Vermont for the likes of Twista, Black Rob, Maino, Bizarre of D12, Diabolic, R.A. The Rugged Man, Ren Thomas, Slaine, Termanology, Reks and DJ Dead Eye. The collabo project Kingmakers with Rico James coming soon!

For too many years I worshipped money, booze, and possessions. You can hear it in the message of most of my music. It made me hustle hard, but I've always had that work ethic in me thanks to my parents. It also made me unhappy, which was hard to admit to myself. Positive thinking is engrained in me and I thought I could will myself into happiness. That was impossible, what I really needed was to evolve.

The first and best thing I did was quit drinking. I've done it for periods before but have fallen back into old routines, not realizing how the booze was giving me a false sense of happiness. Followed by "anxiety hangovers." The next thing I did was jump back into community service through coaching, I forgot how much I love basketball! I picked up more books and began to read daily, started my school work earlier in the week, and spent every bit of free time I had with my family. I even exercise fairly consistently.

I say all that to tell you this. My personal journey has brought me to a point where I'm truly happy. Shoot, I'm even thinking about ditching my anxiety medication. I've been writing again, but mostly essays, poetry, and short stories. I still haven't been able to write music, my mind just doesn't want to rap, I guess. I'm starting a non-profit focused on community service and will share more about that in December. I'm also coaching youth basketball wherever and whenever I can, there's been some rumbles about announcing games locally and analyzing Marble Valley League hoops. I'm letting the cards fall as they may, staying focused on what I love and allowing life to guide me towards my true purpose.

Love you all!

Music was fun but I felt too selfish.

"Come to MY show"
"Listen to MY song"
"Like and share MY stupid post"

That's never been who I actually am.

LeBron is unreal. If I hadn't watched him play 21 NBA seasons I wouldn't believe he just turned 39.

LeBron James now has a higher 3-point percentage for the season than Steph Curry 🤯
